ELAN was founded in 1989 in Lexington, Kentucky, where they are still located. ELAN claims to be the first to combine music, TV and telephone features into one whole-home entertainment/communications experience. Holder of 30 patents and sold in 58 countries, ELAN has experienced 700 percent growth since 1995.

Owned by Nortek since 2003, in 2005 ELAN purchased high-end audio manufacturer Sunfire. In 2007 HomeLogic, a leading manufacturer of IP-based home control systems became part of the ELAN group.
