Updates to the native 4K, HDR-capable models (the VPL-VW5000ES, VPL-VW665ES, and VPL-VW365ES) are intended to improve HDR functionality, adding automatic selection of the BT.2020 color space when appropriate, an HDR Contrast function to easily adjust brightness, and an HDR Indicator to let users know when HDR content is being received. Sony Electronics has announced new firmware updates for five of Sony's current projector models. The projector models receiving a firmware update are: VPL-HW65ES, VPL-HW45ES, VPL-VW5000ES, VPL-VW665ES and VPL-VW365ES.

The updates for the VPL-VW5000, VPL-VW665 and VPL-VW365 add the software features that Sony announced for the VPL-VW675 at CEDIA this year:
• Adds the HDR Contrast function to the Picture Menu (when viewing HDR content) to allow adjustment of the average screen brightness
• Adds automatic selection of BT2020 color space when receiving such content
• Adds an HDR indicator in the Information Menu when HDR content is being received

VPL-HW65ES/HW45ES (link to update)

This utility updates the system software to version 1.301 and provides the following changes and benefits:
• Adds support for the Sony unified control protocol (common protocol / ADCP)
• The Remote Start function is no longer available as part of Network Management (VPL-HW65ES)
• Adds minor bug fixes

Further improvement of HDR-related functionality:
• Adds the HDR Contrast function to the Picture Menu (when viewing HDR content) to allow adjustment of the average screen brightness
• Adds automatic selection of BT2020 color space when receiving such content

• Adds Lens Center Return function
• Improves overall picture quality
• Adds minor bug fixes
