One thing I find most amusing about this article is its abject terror of the "F-word" -- no, not that one, but flac (free lossless audio codec). I wonder if this is because the fact that flac format is not just free, but also open source absolutely terrifies anyone who still hangs onto the paid-closed-source model for his or her very life? Things that make you go, "Hmmmmm." (Sorry, Arsenio, couldn't resist -- send me a bill -- and/or a copyright violation notice).
One thing that is overlooked by many is the fact that just because a BR player can play higher resolution audio files does not mean it will sound better than a player that is not playing higher resolution source material, due in part to the fact the the output stages on an entry level BR player are IC and not discrete...so without a good output stage the fact that a BR player can play higher resolution material is somewhat useless...
The last thing we need is for folks who have already invested in Blu-ray setups that can handle the existing lossless audio formats to have to buy new Blu-ray players just to get high resolution audio!
Hello? The need to buy specialized equipment for high resolution audio disks is precisely what killed SACD and DVD-A - as noted in this article. If they want to add a new profile level to enable special features, fine - as long as the disks will play the music on existing setups capable of playing current DolbyTrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, and LPCM movie soundtracks.
Let's clear up some misconceptions present in this article:

30 percent market penetration? Currently there is an installed base of about 12 million BD players in the US. There are approximately 100 million households. How do you get 30% with those numbers? And most of those players are PS3s.

This is incorrect. There is very little catalog (or even new) material at the label that I work (one of the largest) at 192/24. Most of the catalog masters are still analog, and would require quite a bit of funding to transfer. Most the labels' online digital catalog is at 44.1/16 as that is the format used for current MP3/AAC delivery to most music services. The standard digital mastering format for current new releases is 96/24. There is hardly any 192/24 content at all.

I wouldn't hold my breath. The fact that BD has mandatory copy protection (with high license fees and replication costs), (currently) low market penetration, and no car systems makes the format a long shot for audio. Plus I can tell you the sales numbers for DVD-Audio and SACD were beyond dismal, thus precluding the majors from pursuing that market for a long time.
In case you haven't noticed, the use-case and buying habits of the U.S. music purchaser has changed dramatically in the last 10 years. People expect to buy music on their cell phones or computers. Physical formats are on their way out. Audio fidelity is not a selling point for most purchasers; it's all about convenience and impulse sales.
