Founded in 1929, Akai introduced reel-to-reel tape decks, cassette decks, and professional audio equipment, and helped develop the on-screen display for VCRs.

In 1984, Akai created a professional division making products like electronic musical instruments, which was eventually sold to Numark, maker of ION Audio and Alesis.  Today, Akai makes televisions, portable music players, receivers, home theater systems, car stereos, and many types of home appliances including vacuum cleaners and microwaves.
