Apple's Airpods lineup is reportedly gearing up for a significant overhaul in 2024. Recent reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman shed light on the forthcoming changes that Apple is planning for its audio accessory range.

Apple's AirPods 3, introduced in 2021, haven't performed as well in the market as Apple had hoped. This has led to the company's decision to phase out both the second-generation and third-generation AirPods when successors are unveiled in the fall of 2024. The third-generation AirPods faced challenges in terms of sales due to consumers often opting for the more affordable second-generation model.

To address this issue, Apple is planning to simultaneously launch two variations of the fourth-generation AirPods, which will be positioned below the AirPods Pro. This move is designed to provide clearer distinctions between the offerings, reducing consumer confusion.

Both versions of the fourth-generation Apple's AirPods are expected to feature a design that merges elements of the third-generation AirPods and the more advanced AirPods Pro. The result will be a sleek and ergonomic design with shorter stems, providing a comfortable fit for users. However, neither variant is likely to include replaceable silicone ear tips, retaining the traditional one-size-fits-most open-air design of standard AirPods.

The higher-end model of the fourth-generation AirPods will incorporate premium features borrowed from the AirPods Pro, such as noise cancellation and a charging case with integrated speakers for Find My alerts. This move will enhance the user experience but still fall short of the AirPods Pro in terms of noise cancellation performance and overall sound quality.

In addition to design changes, Apple is continuing its transition to USB-C across its product lineup. Both variants of the fourth-generation AirPods will feature USB-C for charging, aligning with Apple's broader ecosystem.

For the AirPods Max, a slight refresh is expected in 2024. While the updates will include the introduction of a USB-C port and new color options, the core features and functionality of the AirPods Max are anticipated to remain largely unchanged. This is a significant development as the AirPods Max were initially introduced in 2020 and have not seen any substantial updates since their debut.

As for Apple's AirPods Pro, users will have to wait until 2025 for a new iteration. While the report doesn't provide specific details on the redesign, it hints at the introduction of a new chip and potentially health-related features.

It's important to note that these are projections and Apple has not officially confirmed these plans. Apple enthusiasts and audio aficionados will be eagerly anticipating the official details from the tech giant as they eagerly await the new generation of AirPods.
