In celebration of five decades of audio innovation, Audio-Technica has launched the ATH-ADX3000, a set of open-back headphones designed to deliver high-fidelity sound at a more accessible price point than its flagship models. These headphones are handcrafted in Tokyo, Japan, and combine premium materials with advanced driver technology, making them a noteworthy addition to the brand's lineup.
The ATH-ADX3000 follows the legacy of the ATH-ADX5000, Audio-Technica's flagship open-back headphones introduced in 2017. While the new model draws from the same high-performance driver technology as its predecessor, it is positioned at a substantially lower price, available for $999. The ADX3000 aims to offer similar sound quality and build characteristics while keeping affordability in mind.
At the heart of the ATH-ADX3000 is Audio-Technica's Core Mount Technology, initially developed for the ATH-ADX5000. This design centers the driver within the housing to balance acoustic space on both sides of the diaphragm, enhancing airflow and sound accuracy.
This setup, combined with open-back architecture, aims to provide a natural and spacious sound experience. The open-back structure also enables air to flow freely around the drivers, reducing potential distortion from air pressure build-up, a feature audio enthusiasts typically value for clarity and accuracy in playback.
“Our engineers worked hard to achieve a frequency response that is not easy to obtain by using only natural air flow,” Audio-Technica lead engineer Hiromichi Ozawa said in a press release. “Our expertise in driver technology influenced our approach to open-back headphones, and enabled us to ensure that the driver diaphragm moves with the purest motion possible.”
Each pair of ATH-ADX3000 headphones is assembled from in-house components by a team of skilled engineers in Audio-Technica’s Machida, Tokyo facility. The design features a 58mm driver unit with a tungsten-coated diaphragm, a pure iron magnetic circuit, and a lightweight aluminum housing.
The driver unit combines all of these elements in a single, integrated assembly, reducing unwanted vibrations and resonances. The use of a pure iron magnet in the circuitry promises enhanced dynamic range, enabling the headphones to handle a broad frequency response of 5Hz to 45kHz, which exceeds the requirements for hi-res audio certification.
Audio-Technica has optimized the ADX3000 for versatility, with an impedance of 50 ohms and a sensitivity rating of 98 dB/mW, making it compatible with various playback devices, even those without a dedicated amplifier. The headphones have a maximum input power of 700 milliwatts, allowing users to enjoy high-fidelity sound without concerns about signal loss or insufficient amplification.
The ATH-ADX3000 prioritizes comfort for extended listening sessions, thanks to a lightweight frame constructed from magnesium alloy. Weighing only 257 grams (approximately 9.8 ounces), the headphones maintain a durable yet minimalistic design. The frame’s minimal weight is complemented by velour earpads and an adjustable headband, aimed at providing a secure but gentle fit.
By incorporating a honeycomb-punched grille, which exposes the driver, the design highlights the open-back structure and ensures that airflow is unrestricted. This approach is intended to produce a more authentic soundstage, allowing users to experience audio in a setting that mirrors a live performance environment.
Each unit comes with a detachable 3-meter (9.8-foot) cable, which connects via Audio-Technica’s A2DC connectors on the headphone side and terminates with a standard 6.3mm (1/4-inch) stereo plug for compatibility with a range of audio sources. The headphones are packaged in a protective aluminum storage case, offering users a convenient and secure way to transport and store their equipment.
The ATH-ADX3000 is available now for $999 on Amazon, positioning it as a premium, yet more affordable, alternative to Audio-Technica’s ATH-ADX5000, which retails for twice as much.
