I never thought I’d be someone who watches movies projected onto the ceiling, but here I am—and I love it. I picked up the Boom Mini 4-in-1 Smart Projector as a fun gadget to enhance casual movie nights and maybe throw a few backyard screenings in the summer. What I didn’t expect was how seamlessly it would integrate into my everyday routine and how much it would change the way I enjoy media at home.

These days, projectors have come a long way. They’re no longer just for classrooms or high-end home theaters. Compact, smart, and surprisingly powerful, modern projectors like this one bring a truly cinematic experience into everyday spaces—bedrooms, apartments, backyards, or even the ceiling above your bed. And for someone like me who values simplicity, flexibility, and solid performance without needing a dedicated home theater room, this projector has been the perfect addition.

From its intuitive Google TV interface and strong built-in speakers to its clever rotatable design and crisp 1080p image, the Boom Mini delivers more than I expected, without needing extra gadgets, wires, or effort. Whether you're a tech-savvy user or someone just looking for a straightforward, plug-and-play setup, this projector offers a lot of versatility and value in a surprisingly compact package.

A Surprising First Impression

From the moment I unboxed the Boom Mini, I was impressed by its sleek, modern design. It doesn’t look like a cheap plastic gadget—its minimalist look fits nicely in any room. It’s compact and self-contained with its own stand, so there’s no need for a tripod or mounting brackets. Even better, the projector rotates a full 180°, which means I can project onto a wall, ceiling, or really any surface with almost no setup.

One of my favorite features, hands down, is the ceiling projection. If you’ve never watched a movie while lying flat on your back staring up at the ceiling, you’re missing out. It’s like your own personal planetarium—perfect for lazy Sundays or winding down before bed. I can project a 160-inch image directly above me, and it still feels sharp and immersive.

Easy Setup, Even for a Google Home Newbie

This was my first time using Google Home, and I was a little hesitant at first. But the projector made the setup process painless. I downloaded the Google Home app, followed the on-screen prompts, and in about 10–15 minutes, I was ready to go. The projector automatically connected to my Wi-Fi and walked me through linking all of my streaming accounts.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could easily access Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, YouTube, Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and more—all without plugging in a separate streaming stick. Everything is built into the projector, and the Google TV interface is clean and intuitive. It even recommends shows and movies based on what I’ve watched across platforms, which is a nice touch.

There are also extra features like customizable screen savers (including using your own photos or AI-generated images), device grouping, and location settings, but I kept it simple and focused on streaming. If you’re a tech enthusiast, there's plenty to explore—but if you're like me and just want to watch a movie, you can ignore the extras and dive right into content.

Picture Quality That Surprised Me

For a projector of this size and price point, the picture quality is impressive. It has a native 1080p resolution and supports 4K input. The image is crisp and vibrant, especially in a dark room. Colors are accurate, and the picture fills a large space without looking washed out. Of course, like most projectors, it performs best in low-light settings. During the day, I pull the blinds or use blackout curtains to get the most out of it.

The autofocus and automatic keystone correction are genuinely useful. Within about three seconds of turning it on or moving it, the image automatically adjusts for a sharp, aligned picture. That said, I found that manual adjustments gave me the best results, especially when projecting onto the ceiling at odd angles. Thankfully, the menus are easy to navigate, and tweaking settings doesn’t feel like a chore.

One thing I noticed was how HDR content can sometimes appear a bit washed out. HDR encourages higher brightness and color settings that didn’t look quite right to me, so I turned HDR off for a more natural picture. The fact that HDR and non-HDR settings are separate is actually helpful—I could fine-tune each mode to my liking.

Sound That Holds Its Own

I didn’t expect much from the built-in speakers, but they turned out to be surprisingly powerful and clear. In a bedroom or medium-sized room, the audio is more than enough for casual viewing. I usually set it to Movie Mode, which gives the most balanced and immersive sound.

When I used the projector outside by the pool for a “dive-in movie” night, I paired it with a Bluetooth speaker for added volume and bass. Bluetooth connectivity worked flawlessly, and syncing was fast. Still, the onboard 20W speakers are good enough that I rarely feel the need for external audio, especially indoors.

Design and Portability Make It Easy to Love

The portability of the Boom Mini is one of its strongest selling points. It’s compact and lightweight enough to carry from room to room or take outside for an evening under the stars. The integrated stand eliminates the hassle of tripods, and the rotatable design adds a whole layer of flexibility that most budget projectors simply don’t offer.

The only minor complaint I have is the placement of the HDMI port. It’s located on the side of the unit rather than the back, which can make cable management a little awkward if you're plugging in a game console or external device. But considering that most of my content is streamed via built-in apps, I rarely use it anyway.

Fan Noise and Realistic Expectations

Like most projectors, the fan is audible, especially in ECO mode. It’s not obnoxious, but it’s there. I’ve found that during quiet movie scenes or when nothing is playing, it’s noticeable—but when content is running, the audio usually drowns it out. I stick with ECO mode because it balances brightness and fan noise best. Vivid mode looks slightly better but cranks up the fan noticeably.

Also, while this projector casts a great image on walls and ceilings, you’ll get the best results using a proper projection screen. It’s not required, but if you're going all-in on movie night, it’s worth the upgrade.

Final Thoughts: Small Device, Big Experience

After spending time with the Boom Mini 4-in-1 Smart Projector, I can confidently say it’s more than just a cool tech toy—it’s a lifestyle upgrade. It takes everyday moments and elevates them, whether it’s watching a movie while lying in bed, throwing an impromptu movie night in the backyard, or setting up a weekend cartoon marathon for the kids. It’s easy to use, travel-friendly, and stylish enough to sit out in your living room without looking out of place.

No, it’s not going to replace a dedicated high-end home theater system—but that’s not what it’s aiming for. It’s built for people who want great entertainment without needing a permanent setup or professional calibration. It offers flexibility, quality, and a surprising amount of power in a small package. And for the price? It punches far above its weight.

If you’re looking for a smart projector that offers excellent picture quality, solid sound, true portability, and the freedom to watch from virtually anywhere—including your ceiling—this is an easy recommendation. The Boom Mini may be compact, but the experience it delivers is anything but small.
