Beyerdynamic has introduced the second generation of its high-performance studio headphones, the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII, now equipped with a new TESLA.45 driver, which promises improved sound quality, comfort, and flexibility to meet the demands of modern music production. Available for $599.99, both models target audio professionals requiring reliable and adaptable studio tools.
In response to the diverse needs of contemporary music production, beyerdynamic has reduced the impedance of the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII headphones to 30 ohms. This adjustment should enable these models to work with a wider range of playback devices, such as portable audio equipment, without compromising audio fidelity. The design is intended to provide sound engineers and music producers with the flexibility to switch between devices without noticeable changes in sound quality or output.
The defining feature of these second-generation headphones is the newly developed TESLA.45 driver. Developed at beyerdynamic’s headquarters in Heilbronn, Germany, this driver includes a PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) polymer diaphragm that enhances bass response while maintaining clarity and minimizing distortion. Additionally, the aluminum-coated copper voice coil offers more precise treble frequencies, designed to reduce ear fatigue during prolonged use in studio environments.
With reduced Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the TESLA.45 driver enables cleaner audio reproduction, allowing for high accuracy in signal processing and an overall balanced sound profile. Beyerdynamic has maintained its signature detailed treble response, improving the headphones' utility for critical tasks like mixing and mastering.
The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII models have been calibrated to provide a smoother, more balanced response, minimizing sharp peaks in the treble range and offering a refined experience for music professionals.
"As we continue to see the lines blur between traditional studio setups and at-home production workflows, flexibility and uncompromised audio quality have become key priorities for professionals and enthusiasts alike," says Andreas Rapp, CEO of beyerdynamic.
"The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII exemplify this, offering cleaner sound, improved comfort, and precision for every production in the ultra-premium studio headphones beyerdynamic fans already know and love.”
The closed-back DT 1770 PRO MKII is designed to suppress external noise, making it ideal for recording, monitoring, and editing tasks that benefit from isolation. According to beyerdynamic, the updated model features a lively sound profile with powerful bass, particularly useful for studio environments where control over external sounds is essential.
The frequency response has been fine-tuned, offering a smoother representation of upper mid and high frequencies, intended to improve versatility in various studio applications.
Equipped with both leatherette and velour earpads, the DT 1770 PRO MKII caters to different recording needs. The leatherette earpads are particularly suited for vocal booth work, as they minimize sound leakage that might interfere with sensitive microphone setups. These features collectively enhance the headphones' adaptability, making them suitable for recording professionals in dynamic studio environments.
The DT 1990 PRO MKII, with its open-back design, is crafted for tasks such as mixing and mastering, where sound clarity and spatial awareness are crucial. This model creates a spacious soundstage that enables detailed monitoring across a full frequency range, including accurate low-end reproduction. Adjustments have been made to the treble response, particularly around 8 kHz, to avoid issues that could lead to critical mixing errors. This balanced sound profile helps engineers make informed decisions during the mastering process.
For added flexibility, beyerdynamic provides two types of velour earpads with the DT 1990 PRO MKII. The “Producing Velour” earpad is designed to enhance bass, delivering a fuller sound suited for the early stages of production. Meanwhile, the “Mixing & Mastering Velour” earpad offers an analytical sound for refining final mixes, allowing professionals to tailor the headphones to specific production needs.
Both models in the MKII lineup are engineered with comfort in mind, addressing the long hours that audio professionals often spend with headphones. The headband, made from spring steel, combines memory foam and leatherette, distributing pressure evenly to avoid discomfort on the head’s crown area. This design choice accommodates extended wear, ideal for users in studio settings who require durable equipment capable of withstanding daily wear and tear.
To extend the headphones' lifespan, beyerdynamic has incorporated replaceable components such as headbands and earpads. This design feature enables professionals to maintain their headphones over the years without needing a full replacement, supporting both sustainability and practical maintenance within a studio environment.
In terms of connectivity, beyerdynamic includes a 3-meter detachable cable and a 5-meter spiral cable with each model, equipped with a lockable 3-pin mini-XLR connector. Both models come with a hard case, protecting the headphones during travel or storage. For creators who work across various devices, beyerdynamic offers an optional USB-C cable for direct connection to laptops, tablets, and other compatible devices.
The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII are now available on beyerdynamic's website and Amazon, each priced at $599.99.
