Bose Acquires High-End Audio Brand McIntosh

The iconic audio brands McIntosh and Sonus faber have found a new home as Bose acquires their parent company, McIntosh Group.

Bose Acquires High-End Audio Brand McIntosh

Bose Corporation has announced its acquisition of the McIntosh Group, a name synonymous with high-performance audio. The deal, which also includes McIntosh’s subsidiary Sonus faber, expands Bose’s portfolio into the premium and luxury audio market while opening opportunities for collaboration in automotive sound systems.

Bose’s acquisition of McIntosh is described as a strategic decision aimed at enhancing its presence in the high-performance audio space. With McIntosh’s reputation for amplifiers, loudspeakers, and turntables, the acquisition complements Bose’s existing lineup of headphones, soundbars, and car audio systems. The integration of the two brands brings together more than 175 years of collective expertise in audio design and engineering.

According to Bose, McIntosh and Sonus faber will retain their focus on producing premium audio equipment while Bose continues to innovate in popular categories such as noise-canceling headphones and immersive audio. By combining their strengths, the companies plan to deliver a wider range of audio solutions, catering to both audiophiles and general consumers.

“Over the last six decades we’ve delivered the best premium audio experiences possible; now, with McIntosh Group in our portfolio, we can unlock even more ways to bring music to life in the home, on-the-go and in the car,” said Lila Snyder, CEO of Bose Corporation.

“We look forward to honouring the heritage of these brands, investing in their future and pushing the boundaries of audio innovation to bring customers experiences they’ve never heard before.”

A key area of synergy lies in automotive audio. Bose has a long-standing presence in the automotive sector, with sound systems featured in vehicles from brands such as Cadillac, Nissan, and Porsche. McIntosh, meanwhile, has made strides in the same space, with its sound system available as a premium option for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

The acquisition is expected to spur collaborative efforts in this area, combining Bose's expertise in spatial audio and immersive technologies with McIntosh's design-driven approach. Bose has highlighted its ambition to redefine in-car audio experiences, building on recent trends in immersive formats like Dolby Atmos, which have gained traction in luxury automotive markets.

“Bose’s dedication to research and singular focus on audio provides a tremendous opportunity to complement and enable our own pursuit of delivering inimitable, ultimate-quality audio experiences,” said Daniel Pidgeon, CEO of McIntosh Group.

“Gaining access to their expertise as a pioneer in automotive audio will also help us accelerate our presence and enable us to deliver solutions that are commensurate with our reputation and performance standards.”

Despite concerns from McIntosh enthusiasts about potential changes to the brand’s iconic product line, Bose has emphasized that both companies will remain focused on their respective strengths. Bose will continue developing consumer audio products, while McIntosh and Sonus faber will prioritize high-end audio equipment. This continuity ensures that McIntosh’s amplifiers and turntables, which have earned a devoted following, will remain a cornerstone of its product lineup.

This acquisition shows the ongoing trend of consolidation in the consumer audio industry. Companies like Samsung, Sony, and Voxx International have previously expanded their portfolios through similar acquisitions.

For example, Samsung purchased Harman, the parent company of JBL and Harman Kardon, while Sony acquired headphone maker Audeze. Bose’s move to acquire McIntosh further demonstrates the increasing overlap between mass-market and luxury audio brands.

The financial specifics of the transaction remain undisclosed, and the acquisition was facilitated by Highlander Partners, a private investment firm. Bose has stated that it aims to work closely with McIntosh and Sonus faber to ensure a smooth integration, signaling its commitment to maintaining the distinct identities of each brand.

With this acquisition, Bose enters a new chapter, expanding its footprint in both luxury home audio and automotive sound systems. While much remains to be seen in terms of specific product developments, the collaboration sets the stage for potential innovations that could redefine how consumers experience audio at home and on the road.
