Bose, founded in 1964 by Amar Bose, is truly the grandfather of mass-market loudspeakers. The Bose 901 loudspeaker is one of the most significant loudspeakers ever designed and to this day still enjoys critical acclaim.
Bose, while not loved at all by audiophiles, is the most well known and most successful loudspeaker brand on the planet. They have or had car audio programs with the likes of Daimler Benz, Porsche and Ferrari, thus building brand awareness with the well-heeled but less snobby affluent market. Today, Bose builds lifestyle audio systems including clock radios, speaker systems to support the audio needs of iPod users and HDTV viewers less than the audiophile.
Bose's most significant accomplishment is their marketing. Perhaps no other brand in the American economy is able to effectively market in so many diverse "channels". Bose had a significant presence in big box retail such as Circuit City, and was hurt somewhat by that companies demise. They have direct sales via the Internet. They have infomercials, door-to-door programs, outlet store locations, automotive systems and far beyond.
Other than perhaps Sony - Bose is the most powerful name in AV even if the audiophiles say "no highs, no lows, must be Bose."
