A new name in the custom in-ear monitor (IEM) industry, Dark Matter Audio Labs (DMA Labs), is aiming to make waves with its upcoming launch. Founded by audio industry veterans, the company is setting out to deliver high-performance, customizable audio solutions designed specifically for musicians, engineers, and discerning audiophiles.
DMA Labs officially unveils its debut product lineup on January 21, 2025, offering four custom IEM models with price points ranging from $599 to $1,699. Each model promises a tailored blend of durability, precision, and performance, with the aim of making professional-grade IEMs more accessible.
DMA Labs’ founders bring a wealth of experience to the table. Kocen has spent years on the road as a front-of-house and monitor engineer, working closely with artists to perfect their live sound. This hands-on experience gave him a deep understanding of what performers truly need in their IEMs.
Friesema, on the other hand, brings more than 20 years of acoustic engineering expertise, having designed a range of innovative audio products, including custom and universal IEMs.
Together, they’re combining their knowledge to create a line of custom IEMs that’s built to perform under pressure while remaining accessible to a wide range of users.
DMA Labs’ initial product range includes four custom IEM models, each designed to cater to different audio preferences and professional requirements:
Each model is handcrafted in the USA and comes with durable housings, lightweight cables, and protective cases. These IEMs are designed to withstand the daily grind of live performances and demanding use, ensuring they’re not just about sound quality but also reliability.
Speaking about the launch, Tal Kocen, Co-Founder of DMA Labs, said: “Dark Matter’s IEMs are more than just tools; they’re an extension of the artist’s craft. We’ve created them to enhance every aspect of performance, from clarity during live shows to comfort during long rehearsals.”
Custom IEMs from DMA Labs emphasize both performance and comfort. The process starts with precise ear impressions taken by an audiologist or DMA Labs staff. These impressions are then digitized using 3D scanning technology, allowing for a highly accurate fit. The result is a snug, comfortable seal that enhances sound quality while minimizing common issues like the occlusion effect.
Durability is another key focus. DMA Labs highlights the rugged construction of its IEMs, making them suitable for the demands of touring musicians and audio professionals. The company emphasizes that its products are designed to stand up to constant use while maintaining audio fidelity.
DMA Labs isn’t just about making IEMs. The company is also deeply involved in supporting musicians and the broader music community. From backing initiatives that promote mental health and housing support for musicians to advocating for fair copyright royalties, DMA Labs is positioning itself as more than just a product maker—it’s a partner to the people who make music.
If you’re curious to try these IEMs for yourself, DMA Labs will be at the NAMM 2025 trade show in Anaheim, California, from January 23-25. At booth 10933, visitors can test the IEMs and even get custom ear impressions done on-site by co-founder Tal Kocen.
The full lineup will be available for purchase starting January 21, 2025, through their official website, darkmatteraudiolabs.com.
