• This is an attractive sound bar that is an excellent pairing for flat panels 42 inches or less, with a good approximation of a true surround sound experience.
• Because you are getting the feeling of five speakers from one, you don't need multiple speakers and the associated wiring that clutter up your room.
• You need a receiver to pair with this sound bar. While Definitive Technology poses this as a plus, if you're looking for a complete home theater system in one package, this isn't it.
• For added bass, you'll need a subwoofer. Definitive Technology recommends their entry-level ProSub 800 ($399).
The SSA-42 is not as powerful as the SSA-50, yet it still has the capability to fill a room, especially a smaller one, with exciting, detailed and immersive audio. If you are looking for an all-in-one sound bar that can plug directly into your TV, this isn't it. You do need a receiver and we (as well as Definitive Technology) recommend using it with a subwoofer for the best experience. At $799, it's a bargain and a great solution for a 42-inch (or smaller) HDTV.
