Experience
disney-wow-world-of-wonder.jpgIt wouldn't be a Disney disc without a healthy allotment of self-promotion, and that's basically all you'll get in the Experience section. Like the accompanying "Visions: Inspired By Nature" disc, this section is designed to show off the fruits of your calibration labor, with attractive HD demo clips from movies like Toy Story, Up, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and The Prestige.

High Points

  • WOW provides generally clear explanations of HDTV concepts and test patterns, which will be helpful for beginners.
  • This disc offers a nice array of video setup patterns that should appeal to the enthusiast, and it includes basic audio setup options (including test tones for speaker level).
  • The disc is well organized.
  • The Pixel Flipper can help unstick pixels or counteract image retention.
  • A blue color filter is included to set color/tint.
  • The included booklet is a great supplement to the video explanations, especially if you learn better through reading than hearing.

Low Points

  • The audio setup tools are pretty basic, consisting mostly of speaker ID, polarity, and level.
  • The menus can be taxing to navigate when you're trying to learn about the tests, but at least the Expert section includes direct access to the test patterns--allowing you to bypass the other sections if desired.
  • The ambient/new-age music that accompanies the menu screens is annoyingly repetitive, but you can always turn down the volume when you've completed the audio setup.

Conclusion
Disney's WOW calibration disc is definitely aimed at the end user, not the professional calibrator or reviewer looking for highly technical evaluation/calibration tools. It doesn't offer as many advanced options as DVE or Spears & Munsil, but it's more thorough than the Monster/ISF HDTV Calibration Wizard DVD. As a consumer-oriented disc, it does an excellent job meeting the needs of both the home theater novice and the home theater enthusiast who wants to go a little deeper into the setup process. Unless you really like to look at pretty pictures of nature, I recommend you save a few bucks and go with the single-disc Blu-ray copy of WOW. It can help ensure that you're getting the best performance out of every HDTV in the house.
