Dolby-Atmos-4.jpgDolby Atmos is a next-generation surround sound format that was announced by Dolby in April 2012. The first film to make use of the technology was Pixar's Brave at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. The system was well-met by the industry with over 300 theaters installing Atmos systems by 2013.

What sets Atmos apart from other systems already in use is the number of available audio channels and the positioning of the speakers. Atmos can support 128 audio channels and feed them to 64 seperate speakers. Unlike traditional surround sound the Atmos system places speaker above the viewer, to give a dolby-atmos-speaker-placement-diagram-640x531.jpgsense of height to sound effects (like rain, helicopters, etc.)

Atmos recently entered the home theater market with several companies including Pioneer and Onkyo coming out with Atmos-equipped home theater systems. Instead of 64-speakers however, the home versions are scaled down to 11.1 or 9.1 configurations.
