Dolby has announced that it has added Lionsgate to its list of content partners to offer home video releases with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Lionsgate joins Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers, Universal, and MGM in supporting Dolby Vision. At this point, we don't know any specific titles coming from Lionsgate, nor do we know if this content will be offered in the Ultra HD Blu-ray format or just via streaming services like Netflix.
From Dolby
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. and Lionsgate have announced they are partnering to release a slate of Lionsgate new release and catalog titles mastered in Dolby Vision and mixed in Dolby Atmos to offer a premium cinematic experience to the home entertainment market. As a result of this collaboration, consumers with Dolby Vision-enabled televisions and Dolby Atmos-enabled home theater products will be able to enjoy a broad spectrum of entertainment content from Lionsgate.
Dolby's immersive sound and visual technologies, including Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, provide the complete next-generation home entertainment experience for consumers. Dolby Vision transforms the TV watching experience with dramatic imaging--incredible brightness, contrast, and ultra vivid color--that brings entertainment to life before your eyes. It achieves its image quality through innovative high-dynamic-range (HDR) technologies that, compared to a standard picture, can deliver brighter highlights, more light-to-dark contrast, and colors never before seen on TV.
Dolby Atmos-enabled home theater products allow sound to move around the room in a three-dimensional way in order to create a more powerfully immersive and emotive soundscape and experience. Together, these groundbreaking technologies provide viewers with a premium home entertainment experience.
"Dolby's commitment to enabling spectacular experiences is realized through this collaboration that combines our industry-leading audiovisual technologies and Lionsgate's incredible pipeline of exciting titles," said Curt Behlmer, SVP, Content Solutions & Industry Relations, Dolby Laboratories. "With this development, Dolby continues to enhance entertainment by giving people the ability to enjoy movies with stunning visuals and immersive object-based audio that draws them into the story on-screen in the comfort of their own homes."
"We remain committed to being at the forefront of expanding and enriching the home entertainment experience for our audiences by incorporating state-of-the-art technologies," said Lionsgate Worldwide Home Entertainment President Ron Schwartz. "We're proud to partner with our friends at Dolby to master titles in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, giving consumers the opportunity to experience their favorite Lionsgate movies in an entirely new way."
As end-to-end solutions--from content creation to distribution and playback--Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are supported by critical points in the ecosystem, including A-list Hollywood directors, executives at major studios, OTT service providers, TV and audio device manufacturers, and operators worldwide.
Lionsgate plans to release a slate of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos titles in the coming months.
