The latest PlayStation 5 beta software update released by Sony brings exciting new features for participants in select countries, including support for high-capacity 8TB SSDs and integration of its cutting-edge Tempest 3D AudioTech with Dolby Atmos devices. The update also includes enhancements in accessibility features, improving the overall gaming experience for users.

Although the beta access is currently limited to invited participants in specific countries, the features introduced in this beta are expected to make their way into the final version of the software, benefitting all PlayStation 5 users in the near future.

One of the most notable upgrades to the beta update is the integration of Sony's Tempest 3D AudioTech with Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices. This integration allows for a more immersive audio experience, as the Tempest 3D AudioTech renders audio specifically for Dolby Atmos devices, including overhead channels.

This enhancement is set to elevate the audio quality of PS5 games, providing players with a heightened sense of realism and immersion during gameplay. Previously, Sony's Tempest 3D AudioTech was only available on select headphones, but with this update, it extends its reach to Dolby Atmos devices such as soundbars, TVs, and home theater systems.

As detailed by the PlayStation Blog, here’s how to turn on Dolby Atmos:

To turn on Dolby Atmos, go to [Settings] > [Sound] > [Audio Output] > [Audio Format (Priority)], and then select [Dolby Atmos].

Another noteworthy addition is the expanded support for SSD storage. Previously, the PS5 fully supported PCIe 4.0 SSDs, but Sony had capped the maximum capacity at 4TB. With the latest beta update, this limitation has been removed, and users can now install high-capacity 8TB SSDs in their consoles.

This significant increase in storage capacity enables gamers to store more games locally, providing them with greater flexibility and convenience. In comparison, Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S currently supports proprietary storage drives with a maximum capacity of 2TB, making the PS5 an attractive option for those who require more storage space.

The beta update also brings improvements in accessibility features, making gaming more inclusive and enjoyable for all users. One of the standout features is the ability to designate a secondary controller as an assist controller for a single account.

This allows two controllers to operate a PS5 console as though they were one, enabling players to collaborate in games or assist friends and family during challenging gameplay sections. This feature opens up new possibilities for social gaming experiences, fostering a sense of connection among players.

Additionally, the beta update introduces a new setting to enable haptic feedback effects when navigating through PS5 menus. This option is compatible with various controllers, including the DualSense controller, the DualSense Edge controller, and the PS VR2 Sense controller. The haptic feedback adds a tactile dimension to the user interface, enhancing the overall usability and making interactions with the console more engaging.

While the beta access is currently limited to a select group of participants, the exciting features included in this update are expected to be made available to all PlayStation 5 users globally in the coming months.
