The moment I fired up the projector, I knew I was experiencing something special. The lens adjustment features on the Epson are phenomenal – a single "Lens" button on the remote cycles through focus, zoom, and shift functions, making it incredibly easy to get a perfect picture. From my 8.5-foot distance, I could zoom anywhere from a 41-inch diagonal image all the way to 86 inches. I settled on a size that perfectly filled my 82-inch screen.
What struck me immediately was the image clarity. Watching the opening scenes of "Baby Driver," I noticed details I'd never seen before – a faint scar on the character's face, subtle stubble on his chin – despite having watched this movie multiple times on TVs and other projectors. The level of detail from this size screen at my 7-foot viewing distance was truly impressive.

Despite not using native 4K LCD panels, the QB1000 creates an image that delivers the full 8.29 million pixels on screen. In practice, I challenge anyone to spot the difference in normal viewing conditions. The pixel-shifting approach also enables higher brightness than many native 4K projectors – a meaningful real-world advantage.
One concern I had placing the projector on a bookshelf just 18 inches from my head was noise. Remarkably, while I could hear a faint fan hum in complete silence, once a movie was playing, the noise completely disappeared from my awareness. At just 27dB, it's quieter than a typical library, which is impressive considering the powerful 3,300-lumen output.
This silence is particularly valuable in small theater rooms like mine, where projector placement often has to be close to the viewer. The QB1000 manages to maintain cool, quiet operation even during extended movie marathons.
My theater room has blackout shades that allow me to control ambient light completely. However, I tested the projector with varying amounts of light in the room. The exceptional brightness of the QB1000 allowed for surprisingly good viewing even with some ambient light present.
One thing worth noting: when the projector is running in a dark room, it naturally reflects light from the screen back into the space, illuminating walls and surfaces. This further emphasizes the importance of dark wall colors in dedicated theater spaces. While my temporary setup doesn't have dark walls, I can see how black or dark gray walls would enhance the immersive experience by making the room "disappear" around the screen.
For those without fully blacked-out rooms, the brightness of this projector makes it much more forgiving. You can still get excellent performance, especially if paired with an ambient light-rejecting screen.
Another aspect that impressed me was how good the picture looked right out of the box. I did zero calibration – literally just plugged it in, fit the image to the screen, and hit play. The results were stunning. While you certainly have the option to tinker and calibrate if that's your thing, it's refreshing to have a premium product that looks fantastic from the moment you power it on.
At $7,999, the QB1000 represents a significant investment. But for certain users, it delivers tremendous value:
