FiiO has introduced its latest portable digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and headphone amplifier, the BTR13, which enters a competitive market with a focus on versatility and affordability. Retailing at just $64, the FiiO BTR13 aims to attract audiophiles and casual listeners alike by offering a wide range of features typically found in higher-end devices.
The FiiO BTR13 is a compact, lightweight device weighing only 28.6 grams, making it highly portable. It features a practical design that includes a built-in clip on the back, allowing users to attach it securely to their clothing or bag straps, ensuring it stays in place during use.
Available in black or blue, the BTR13 maintains a minimalistic aesthetic while offering essential features like a 0.96-inch full-color screen. This screen provides important information, such as the audio format and sampling rate, making it easier for users to monitor their listening experience.
One of the BTR13’s key selling points is its connectivity options. The device is equipped with dual headphone outputs, including a standard 3.5mm unbalanced jack and a 4.4mm balanced connection, catering to a wide range of headphones. The BTR13 also features a USB Type-C input, which is used for connecting to various devices such as smartphones, laptops, and gaming consoles.
FiiO has incorporated a three-position switch on the side of the BTR13, allowing users to toggle between three different modes: “PC,” “Phone,” and “Bluetooth.” Each mode is designed to optimize the device’s performance based on the connected device.
In PC mode, the BTR13 functions as a USB DAC/amp and draws power from the computer, making it an efficient option for desktop use. The Phone mode is tailored for smartphones, where the BTR13 operates as a DAC powered by its internal battery. Lastly, the Bluetooth mode transforms the device into a wireless Bluetooth DAC/amp, enabling users to enjoy high-quality audio without the need for a wired connection.
The BTR13 is equipped with Qualcomm’s QCC5125 Bluetooth chip, which supports a variety of high-resolution audio codecs, including aptX HD and LDAC. These codecs allow the BTR13 to stream high-quality audio wirelessly, making it a versatile option for those who prefer wireless listening.
The device supports the following Bluetooth codecs: SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, and LDAC. However, the quality of the audio will depend on the highest-quality codec supported by the connected device. For instance, iPhone users will be limited to AAC files, as iOS does not support aptX HD and LDAC.
The BTR13 is powered by dual Cirrus Logic CS43131 fully-balanced DAC chips, which convert digital audio signals into analog with up to 24-bit/96kHz resolution. While this falls short of the full range of high-resolution audio (which can reach up to 192kHz), it is sufficient for most users and compatible with the majority of streaming services. However, it’s worth noting that the BTR13 does not support DSD or MQA formats, which are often favored by audiophiles for their superior sound quality.
For users who want to customize their audio experience further, the BTR13 offers access to a 10-band parametric equalizer (PEQ) via FiiO’s mobile app or web portal. The app also includes preset sound effects and headphone curves, providing additional control over the sound output.
A notable feature of the BTR13 is its compatibility with popular gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam Deck. The inclusion of a UAC 1.0 mode allows the BTR13 to work seamlessly with these devices, enhancing the audio experience for gamers. This feature sets the BTR13 apart from many of its competitors, which do not typically offer such versatility.
Despite its many strengths, the FiiO BTR13 has some limitations. The device does not include a lightning-to-USB-C cable, which means iPhone users will need to purchase a third-party OTG-compliant lightning adapter to use the BTR13 with their devices. Additionally, while the BTR13 supports high-resolution audio, it does not offer the highest possible resolution available, which may be a drawback for audiophiles seeking the utmost in sound quality.
The FiiO BTR13 will be available for purchase in September, priced at $64. Until then, you can shop other FiiO's products at Amazon.
