Final has unveiled the D8000 DC and DC Pro, two high-end headphones that promise to redefine planar magnetic technology.

Final's D8000 DC and DC Pro: Are These the Most Advanced Planar Magnetic Headphones Yet?

Japanese audio brand Final has unveiled its latest high-end planar magnetic headphones, the D8000 DC and D8000 DC Pro, marking a significant update to its flagship D8000 series. These new models reflect a complete overhaul of the original D8000 design, with advanced engineering focused on sound quality and comfort.

The “DC” in the model names stands for “Da Capo,” which translates to “from the head” in Italian, symbolizing Final’s return to the drawing board. The company has completely reconstructed the headphones to incorporate updated technologies while maintaining the core principles of its planar magnetic designs. This marks an evolution of the D8000 series that debuted in 2017.

At the heart of these headphones is Final’s proprietary Air Film Damping System (AFDS). First introduced seven years ago, AFDS addresses the typical limitations of planar magnetic drivers, particularly in low-frequency response.

By using air to regulate diaphragm movement, this system aims to reduce distortion and enhance bass performance. The D8000 DC and DC Pro build on this foundation with redesigned acoustic chambers and refined metal mesh structures around the diaphragm to improve sound clarity and spatial depth.

The diaphragm itself is a standout feature. Constructed from lightweight etched aluminum foil, it allows for a more agile and precise response, contributing to a balanced and detailed sound signature.

This design also reduces the overall weight of the headphones, making the D8000 DC 120 grams lighter than its predecessor. The ear pads, made from breathable Washi paper, further enhance comfort and provide a more immersive listening experience.

The chassis, crafted from an aluminum-magnesium alloy, ensures durability while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic. Final has also optimized the headband arc for a secure yet gentle fit, catering to long listening sessions without discomfort.

The D8000 DC and DC Pro share much of the same core engineering, but their sound profiles are tailored for different listening preferences. The D8000 DC is tuned for a more neutral sound, catering to audiophiles seeking purity in playback.

In contrast, the D8000 DC Pro has a slight emphasis on bass frequencies that becomes more prominent as the volume increases. This makes the Pro edition particularly appealing for users who enjoy a richer low-end experience or plan to use the headphones for mixing and mastering applications.

Both models are supplied with two types of cables. The standard D8000 DC includes optical fiber cables, while the Pro version features silver braided cables for improved signal performance and durability.

Technical Specifications:

  • Chassis: Aluminium-magnesium alloy.
  • Driver: AFDS planar magnetic.
  • Sensitivity: 90dB/mW.
  • Impedance: 50Ω.
  • Weight: 431g.
  • D8000 DC cable: OFC (4.4mm/1.5m, XLR/3m).
  • D8000 DC Pro cable: Silver-coated (4.4mm/1.5m, XLR/3m).

With the D8000 DC and DC Pro, Final has taken its planar magnetic headphones to new heights. The combination of lightweight materials, advanced damping systems, and thoughtful ergonomic design shows the company’s dedication to pushing the technical capabilities of its products. These headphones are expected to make a strong impression among audiophiles and professionals alike, offering a blend of technical innovation and refined sound quality.

The Final D8000 DC and DC Pro are available for purchase in the U.K. and are open for pre-order in the U.S., with shipping scheduled for mid-December. The D8000 DC is priced at $4,299, while the D8000 DC Pro comes in at $4,799.
