Noble Audio, a Texas-based company known for its high-end audio products, has unveiled its latest addition to the true wireless stereo (TWS) market: the Fokus Rex5. These earbuds incorporate advanced technology, including a unique hybrid five-driver configuration and sound personalization software, positioning them as a standout offering for audio enthusiasts.
The Fokus Rex5 introduces an unprecedented approach to TWS earbud design, featuring five drivers per earpiece. This includes a 10mm dynamic driver for bass frequencies, a 6mm planar driver for midrange clarity, and three balanced armature (BA) drivers dedicated to treble.
Such a configuration is rarely seen in wireless earbuds, typically reserved for high-end in-ear monitors (IEMs). Noble claims this combination delivers a wide frequency range from 20Hz to 40kHz, offering detailed sound reproduction with full bass, clear mid-tones, and precise highs.
This hybrid driver setup, if implemented effectively, could allow each driver type to perform within its optimal frequency range, potentially avoiding the trade-offs often associated with single-driver systems.
One of the defining features of the Fokus Rex5 is its integration with Audiodo’s sound personalization software. Through Noble’s companion app, users can create custom equalization (EQ) profiles tailored to their unique hearing capabilities. The calibration process adjusts audio output based on the sensitivity of each ear, improving the listening experience.
The EQ profiles are stored directly in the earbuds via Qualcomm’s QCC3091 chip, ensuring that users can access their personalized settings across various devices without reconfiguring the setup. This feature could be especially beneficial for users with asymmetrical hearing sensitivities.
The Fokus Rex5 includes active noise cancelation (ANC) technology, which reduces external sounds for a more immersive experience. Transparency mode is also available, enabling users to remain aware of their surroundings when needed.
For connectivity, the earbuds employ Bluetooth 5.4, offering features like multipoint pairing, which allows simultaneous connections to two devices. Support for advanced audio codecs, including aptX Adaptive and LDAC, ensures compatibility with high-resolution audio sources, alongside the standard AAC and SBC codecs.
The Fokus Rex5 delivers up to seven hours of playback on a single charge without ANC and five hours with ANC activated. The included charging case extends playback time by an additional 40 hours, providing ample charge for long listening sessions. A fast-charging feature offers approximately two hours of playback from just 15 minutes of charging, adding convenience for users on the go.
While Noble Audio has prioritized audio performance and personalization, some practical aspects, such as water and dust resistance, appear to be absent from the Fokus Rex5. This omission suggests the earbuds may not be ideal for activities like exercise or outdoor use in adverse weather conditions.
Technical Specifications:
The Fokus Rex5 earbuds are available for pre-order at $449 (€499/£419), with shipping expected to begin on November 29, 2024. Positioned in the premium segment, they are priced higher than many mainstream competitors, such as the Sony WF-1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Pro 2, which offer advanced features at lower price points.
