Formovie Technology has introduced its latest offering, the Formovie Cinema Edge, an ultra short throw (UST) 4K projector. Priced at $2,500, this new projector aims to bring a combination of high-quality imaging and affordability to consumers. However, the company has launched the product with a special pre-order price of $2,200, making it even more accessible to those looking to upgrade their home theater systems.

The Formovie Cinema Edge is designed to appeal to users with limited space but a desire for a large-screen experience. The projector boasts a 0.23:1 throw ratio, which means it can project a 100-inch image from just 9 inches away from the screen or wall.

This feature is quite useful for small rooms where a traditional projector setup might not be feasible. For those seeking an even larger display, the Cinema Edge can project images up to 150 inches, making it a versatile option for various viewing environments.

Brightness is a key factor in any projector's performance, and the Cinema Edge offers 1,900 ISO lumens. This brightness level is slightly higher than that of its predecessor, the Formovie Theater, which provided 1,800 ISO lumens. The projector also includes multiple brightness modes—Office, Viewing, and Night—allowing users to adjust the brightness based on the environment and their viewing preferences.

The Cinema Edge uses Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology, which is supported by a laser light source. This combination ensures a sharp, clear image with vibrant colors. The projector covers 110% of the Rec. 709 color gamut, a standard that ensures accurate color reproduction. The contrast ratio of 3,000:1 further enhances image quality by providing deep blacks and bright whites, making for a more dynamic viewing experience.

One of the most notable updates in the Cinema Edge is the inclusion of the Google TV operating system. This is a significant improvement over previous models, which ran on Formovie’s proprietary OS.

With Google TV, users gain access to a wide range of streaming services directly through the projector, including Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, and HBO Max. The integration of Google TV also eliminates the need for additional streaming devices, streamlining the setup process.

The projector is equipped with three HDMI 2.1 ports, one of which supports eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel), allowing for easy connection to soundbars and other audio equipment. Additionally, the Cinema Edge includes two USB 2.0 ports, providing further options for connecting external devices.

Audio-wise, the Cinema Edge supports both Dolby Audio and DTS: X, offering an immersive sound experience even without external speakers. However, for those who prioritize sound quality, adding a dedicated sound system or soundbar might still be necessary. The projector features two 15-watt internal speakers, which are sufficient for general use but may not meet the demands of audiophiles.

Another consideration is the noise level. The Cinema Edge operates at a maximum of 32dB, which is relatively quiet and should not detract from the viewing experience.

The Formovie Cinema Edge is also equipped to meet the needs of gamers. It includes a game mode with a refresh rate of 60Hz and a response time of 41.9 milliseconds. While this may not be the fastest on the market, it is competitive for a projector, making it a viable option for casual gaming.

Setup features such as motorized focus and 8-point keystone correction make the Cinema Edge easy to configure. These tools allow users to fine-tune the image alignment and focus, ensuring a sharp and well-positioned display, even in challenging room setups.

Another feature worth mentioning is the projector’s eye protection capabilities. This function helps reduce eye strain during extended viewing sessions, making the Cinema Edge a more comfortable option for long movie nights or binge-watching sessions.

The Formovie Cinema Edge enters the market as a more affordable alternative to the Formovie Theater, which was priced around $3,500 at launch. While the Theater model offered some advanced features, such as Dolby Vision and height-channel Dolby Atmos, the Cinema Edge sacrifices some of these premium features in favor of a lower price point without compromising too much on performance.

The Formovie Cinema Edge is available now for $2,199 at ProjectorScreen.com. The regular price will revert to $2,500 once the projector becomes widely available on September 10, 2024.
