As the tech world eagerly anticipates Google's upcoming Pixel 8 phones, the spotlight is also on the potential software update for the Google Pixel Buds Pro. Recent rumors and leaks suggest that Google is gearing up to introduce several new features, bringing its flagship earbuds closer to the competition, including Apple's AirPods Pro 2.

According to a leak by prominent tech insider Kamila Wojciechowska and X user Mishaal Rahman, the Pixel Buds Pro is poised to receive a firmware update, labeled version 5.9, packed with compelling features. Among the standout additions is the Conversation Detection feature.

This functionality, similar to Apple's Conversation Awareness, automatically pauses media playback and activates transparency mode when the earbuds detect the wearer engaging in a conversation. This feature, while not entirely groundbreaking, adds a layer of convenience for users who frequently switch between personal audio and real-world interactions.

Another notable enhancement is the introduction of Hearing Wellness.

This feature provides users with a live decibel measurement, offering insight into the volume levels of the audio being played. Drawing parallels with the noise level warnings on the Apple Watch, the Pixel Buds Pro's Hearing Wellness aims to educate users about the potential risks of prolonged exposure to loud sounds and suggests optimal listening levels to preserve long-term hearing health.

Clearer Calls, a feature present in Pixel phones, is also expected to make its way to the Pixel Buds Pro. This functionality aims to improve call quality by reducing ambient noise around the person speaking, enhancing the clarity of the voice for the earbud wearer. If successfully implemented, this could be a noteworthy advancement in Bluetooth call quality, bringing wireless communication closer to the fidelity of traditional wired earbuds.

Bluetooth Super Wideband (SWB) is another feature reportedly included in the update. This technology doubles the available bandwidth, promising clearer audio in calls for both the user and the person on the other end. This aligns with the broader industry trend of improving the overall audio experience in wireless earbuds.

The leak also hints at additional features such as a low-latency gaming mode, catering to the gaming community, and the availability of the Pixel Buds Pro companion app on Chromebooks, expanding the device compatibility.

While these rumored features showcase Google's commitment to refining its Pixel Buds Pro, it's essential to approach them with cautious optimism until officially confirmed. If the speculations hold true, the firmware version 5.9 is expected to be unveiled shortly after Google's Made by Google event on October 4. As with previous updates, it is anticipated to be provided free of charge to all Pixel Buds Pro users globally.
