Google’s New Gemini Update Will Change How You Use Smart Devices Forever

Managing your smart home just got easier with Google’s Gemini AI, now integrated with Google Home.

Google’s New Gemini Update Will Change How You Use Smart Devices Forever

Google has officially rolled out its Google Home extension for the Gemini app, promising a more intuitive way to control smart home devices. Previously in public preview, this feature is now gradually becoming available to all users over the next few weeks. The extension enhances Gemini’s capabilities, allowing users to manage their Google Home-connected devices using natural, conversational language.

The integration between Gemini and Google Home brings convenience to everyday tasks. From adjusting the thermostat to dimming the lights, Gemini provides a seamless way to interact with smart home devices through casual language. Commands like “It’s too bright in here” can trigger actions such as lowering the blinds or dimming the lights without requiring precise instructions.

Gemini supports a variety of smart home devices, including:

  • Smart lights and switches
  • Thermostats
  • Curtains and blinds
  • Smart TVs and speakers
  • Appliances like coffee makers, washers, and vacuums

While these features aim to enhance the ease of use, there are specific limitations. For instance, Gemini cannot execute commands involving security devices such as unlocking doors or accessing camera feeds. Instead, it prompts users to open the Google Home app to complete these sensitive actions.

To activate the Google Home extension, users need to connect their Google Home and Gemini apps. Once linked, all compatible devices in the Google Home ecosystem can be controlled via Gemini.

The AI assistant’s conversational interface can handle complex, multi-step commands, such as “Dim the living room lights, turn on the bedroom lamp, and lower the blinds.” This functionality eliminates the need for individual device management, making interactions more efficient.

In addition, Gemini offers on-the-go convenience with features like Gemini Live, which allows users to control devices directly from their phone’s lock screen.

This integration represents Google’s ongoing efforts to compete in the smart home market dominated by Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and other generative AI platforms. Unlike Google Assistant, Gemini incorporates generative AI to provide more flexible and human-like responses. It can also address situational queries, such as checking if a light was left on, saving users time and effort.

While the Google Home extension focuses on convenience, its reach is currently limited. The feature only supports English, and tasks requiring PIN authentication or preconfigured routines are not yet available.

Google’s decision to integrate generative AI into its smart home ecosystem highlights a broader trend in the industry. AI tools like Gemini are increasingly being adopted for home automation, enabling more seamless and intuitive user experiences.

At CES 2025, other tech giants such as LG and Samsung announced plans to incorporate AI assistants into their smart TV interfaces, while companies like Josh.ai and Savant are exploring similar capabilities for their platforms.

These developments signal a shift in how consumers interact with technology in their homes. AI assistants are no longer limited to answering questions or playing music—they’re becoming central to managing the modern connected home. By introducing Gemini’s conversational controls, Google is taking a significant step toward making smart homes more accessible and user-friendly.

As Gemini’s rollout continues, Google will likely refine the extension based on user feedback and expand its capabilities. While the initial release focuses on convenience tasks, future updates could include broader language support, integration with preconfigured routines, and more advanced security features.
