Hegel, the Norwegian audio equipment manufacturer, has launched the H400 Streamliner, a new addition to their lineup of integrated amplifiers. This model replaces the H390 and is positioned between the H190v and the flagship H600 in Hegel’s product range. The H400 Streamliner is designed to deliver high-quality audio performance and versatility, aimed at both audiophiles and casual listeners alike.
The H400 is a Class AB amplifier with a dual-mono construction, ensuring superior sound quality through its symmetrical layout. It delivers 250 watts of power into 8 ohms and is stable down to 2-ohm loads, allowing it to drive a wide range of speakers. One of the main features of the H400 is its high damping factor of 4000, which provides tight control over speakers, resulting in precise and dynamic sound reproduction.
Hegel has designed the H400 Streamliner with simplicity and ease of use in mind. The front panel is sleek and minimalist, featuring two multifunctional knobs for source selection and volume control.
These knobs also function as buttons to mute, pause, or navigate the device menu. The central display is clear and easy to read from a distance, showing only essential information. To maintain a clean appearance, the power button is discreetly located underneath the amplifier.
The H400 is engineered to deliver exceptional audio quality. It incorporates Hegel’s SoundEngine 2 technology, which offers instant distortion correction during amplification. This technology ensures a detailed and agile sound, providing both punch and finesse while maximizing power efficiency. The absence of an equalizer helps preserve signal integrity, further enhancing the audio experience.
Internally, the H400 features a high-quality bit-perfect DAC based on the one found in the H600. This ensures accurate digital-to-analog conversion without any upsampling. The amplifier’s dual-mono design and advanced circuitry contribute to its high performance, making it an ideal choice for discerning listeners who seek clarity and richness in their music.
The H400 Streamliner is optimized for streaming, supporting a wide range of popular platforms such as Apple AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Google Cast, and UPnP. This extensive streaming support is likely facilitated by a Stream Unlimited board, ensuring that all services work seamlessly out of the box.
In addition to its robust streaming capabilities, the H400 introduces the new Hegel Control App, available for both iOS and Android. This app provides users with convenient control over volume, input selection, internet radio, podcasts, and media server playback. The amplifier also features automatic signal detection, which recognizes connected digital audio sources and switches to the correct input without manual selection.
The back panel of the H400 is equipped with a comprehensive range of analog and digital inputs. These include one set of balanced analog XLR, two sets of unbalanced analog RCA, BNC S/PDIF, coaxial S/PDIF, three TOSLINK inputs, and a USB port.
Subwoofers can be connected via the pre-amplifier outputs, and the amplifier can be programmed to accept infrared control signals from a TV remote, enhancing the home entertainment setup's user-friendliness.
Hegel has designed the H400 with energy efficiency in mind. The SoundEngine 2 technology minimizes power consumption while delivering top-tier performance.
Additionally, the amplifier features an auto-standby mode that reduces energy waste without compromising sound quality. Built from high-quality materials and components, the H400 is designed for durability and reliability, ensuring a long life and minimizing the need for frequent maintenance.
