Hisense L9Q: A TV, A Projector, or Both? You Decide

Hisense’s latest flagship Laser TV, the L9Q, promises to bring cinema-scale visuals to living rooms with its new 150-inch screen option.

Hisense L9Q: A TV, A Projector, or Both? You Decide

Hisense has unveiled its latest ultra-short-throw projector, the L9Q Laser TV, ahead of CES 2025—and we were so impressed with its enhanced brightness and clarity in any lighting condition that we awarded it our Best of CES title. Designed to combine the convenience of traditional televisions with the cinematic scale of projectors, the Hisense L9Q introduces a host of upgrades over its predecessors, including a new 150-inch projection size option. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this new flagship model stand out.

Laser TVs like the L9Q blur the lines between TVs and projectors. At their core, they are ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors, which sit close to the screen and use specialized laser light engines to project a sharp, vibrant image. Unlike standard projectors, Laser TVs typically include an ambient light rejection (ALR) screen, integrated speakers, streaming capabilities, and TV tuners, making them functionally closer to traditional televisions.

The Hisense L9Q builds on this concept with several new features aimed at enhancing both image and sound quality, as well as overall usability.

The L9Q gives you options for screen sizes from 100 inches all the way up to a massive 150 inches—a big step up from the 120-inch max offered by the earlier L9H model. Hisense bundles the projector with five different ALR (Ambient Light Rejection) screen options, each designed to make the picture pop by boosting brightness and contrast.

A standout feature of the Hisense L9Q is its TriChroma laser light engine, which cranks up brightness to an impressive 5,000 lumens—nearly double that of its predecessor. Whether you’re setting up in a dimly lit home theater or a brighter living room, this level of brightness ensures the image will hold up beautifully. Plus, the L9Q claims to cover 110% of the BT.2020 color space, which means more vibrant and lifelike colors compared to what you’ll see on most TVs.

Setting up the L9Q is made easier thanks to its redesigned optical system, which includes a throw ratio of 0.18:1. This allows the projector to sit closer to the wall while still delivering those big-screen images. It also features motorized focus and auto screen alignment to streamline the setup process, though fine-tuning manually might still be worth the extra effort for perfectionists.

On the audio side, Hisense has packed in a 6.2.2-channel sound system with 116 watts of power. While the "professional theater" sound claims might be a bit of a stretch, the system is designed to deliver an immersive audio experience with Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X. And if you’re serious about sound, there’s HDMI eARC support to connect external soundbars or AV systems for even more powerful audio.

As for smart features, the L9Q doesn’t disappoint. It runs Google TV, giving you access to over 10,000 apps, 800 free live TV channels, and an extensive library of streaming content. Modern connectivity options like HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6E, and ATSC 3.0 are all here, along with voice assistant support for Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit, making it a well-rounded and future-ready entertainment hub.

The L9Q features a sleek new rectangular design with a brushed metal finish, Black Walnut accents, and subtle ambient lighting effects. This updated look, paired with practical upgrades like a shorter throw ratio and easier setup, shows Hisense’s focus on combining style with functionality in their flagship Laser TV.

The Hisense L9Q Laser TV packs plenty of features for anyone looking to bring a big-screen experience into their home. With its ability to deliver bright, vivid images even in well-lit rooms, it stands out as a strong alternative to traditional TVs—especially for screen sizes over 100 inches. Add to that its smart TV functionality and upgraded audio system, and you’ve got an intriguing option for home entertainment enthusiasts.

That said, the final judgment will come down to the price and availability, which Hisense hasn’t shared yet. As with most high-end tech, the L9Q is expected to come with a hefty price tag, especially considering its expanded features and larger screen size options.

If you’re heading to CES 2025, you’ll have the chance to check out the L9Q in person at Hisense’s booth 16625 from January 7-10.
