The Nuki Smart Lock Ultra, the latest release from Austria-based smart lock maker Nuki, promises to bring both style and functionality to the U.S. market in early 2025. This fifth-generation device follows the success of Nuki’s previous models in Europe, introducing an upgraded motor, refined design, and several new features tailored for American deadbolt systems.

The Nuki Smart Lock Ultra boasts a sleek, stainless steel exterior that integrates seamlessly with most door styles. Unlike earlier models, this unit is significantly smaller, comparable in size to other minimalist smart locks, and incorporates a discreet LED indicator ring. The design not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also conceals a powerful brushless motor, a first in the company’s lineup.

The motor operates more efficiently and quietly than conventional options, a design decision inspired by electric vehicle technology. This motor enables the Nuki Ultra to lock and unlock doors in just 1.5 seconds, providing one of the fastest responses among smart locks available today.

In terms of installation, the U.S. version of the Nuki Ultra will serve as a retrofit, requiring only a replacement of the thumb turn rather than the full lock cylinder. This approach aligns with the functionality of popular competitors like the August Smart Lock, allowing homeowners to retain their existing keys while adding smart capabilities. 

For European users, however, the device comes with a Universal eurocylinder, including security certifications such as EN 1303 and DIN18252, marking a high standard for security in the region.

One unique aspect of the Nuki Ultra is its approach to battery management. Unlike previous Nuki models, which used removable batteries, the Ultra features an integrated lithium-polymer battery that charges directly on the door. The battery’s charging process involves connecting a two-meter magnetic charging cable to an outlet near the door, with a full charge taking about two hours.

Users can expect six months of battery life on a single charge, though the battery’s lifespan may vary based on usage and connectivity settings. Notably, the lock offers extended battery life when operating in Bluetooth or Matter-over-Thread mode instead of Wi-Fi.

The Nuki Ultra offers extensive connectivity options, supporting Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Matter-over-Thread, which provides compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and other Matter-enabled platforms. Unlike older Nuki models that required a separate bridge for Wi-Fi, the Ultra has Wi-Fi built directly into the device, simplifying setup and providing seamless remote access.

For those looking to enhance security, the lock is compatible with Nuki’s existing accessories, including a key fob, a Bluetooth keypad, and a soon-to-be-released Keypad 2, which is expected to feature an upcoming standard called Aliro. This standard aims to introduce ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for unlocking as users approach, similar to Apple’s AirTags.

One area where the Nuki Ultra diverges from some competing smart locks is its lack of NFC-based unlocking for Apple’s Home Key. While this functionality is absent in the current model, Nuki’s roadmap for the Keypad 2, slated for 2025, may bring similar capabilities through the Aliro standard.

While the Nuki Ultra presents an appealing blend of speed, connectivity, and modern aesthetics, it has some quirks that potential buyers may want to consider. The on-door charging setup requires proximity to a power outlet, which may pose a challenge for some users. 

Additionally, for those accustomed to the convenience of Apple’s Home Key, the current lack of direct support may be a drawback, though future updates and accessories might address this gap.

With a price tag of €349 (around $370), the Nuki Smart Lock Ultra positions itself as a premium option in the smart lock market. European users can preorder the Ultra now, with shipping expected in December. For U.S. customers, the device is projected to hit the market in Q2 2025.
