Jazz Legends Meet Audio Royalty: McIntosh Unveils SESSIONS Volume 1 with Peter Erskine Quartet

McIntosh Laboratory has announced the release of SESSIONS Volume 1, a vinyl album featuring eight original jazz compositions by The Peter Erskine Quartet. This project, produced in collaboration with Sterling Sound, aims to provide an exceptional auditory experience for listeners, capturing the essence of live studio performance with meticulous attention to detail in the recording and mastering processes.

SESSIONS Volume 1 was recorded live at Studio A of the famed Henson Recording Studio in Los Angeles, with subsequent mastering done at Sterling Sound in Nashville. The album's production involved the use of analog tape to ensure the highest fidelity, aiming to transport listeners directly into the studio environment.

This process was overseen by a team of expert producers and engineers, who ensured every detail was perfected to create an album that truly represents the live performance of The Peter Erskine Quartet.

The recording's authenticity and sound quality are central to its appeal, promising a high-fidelity vinyl listening experience. Each step, from recording and mixing to mastering and cutting, was handled with precision. The project also included test playbacks on McIntosh systems to ensure the final product met the high standards expected by McIntosh's discerning clientele.

The release of SESSIONS Volume 1 coincides with McIntosh's 75th anniversary, marking a significant milestone for the company. Charlie Randall, President of McIntosh, highlighted the importance of this album in celebrating this anniversary.

“This reference-level analog recording lets audiences discover the brilliance of vinyl, making it the perfect medium to coincide with McIntosh’s 75th anniversary this year,” said Randall.

“Each SESSIONS album will be produced and mixed to capture the essence of live music with the premium sound quality McIntosh is known for – and Volume 1 with The Peter Erskine Quartet is no exception. We’re delighted to have worked with such a well-respected and talented group, along with industry leader Sterling Sound, to introduce original compositions recorded exclusively for the album.”

The Peter Erskine Quartet is composed of drummer Peter Erskine, pianist Alan Pasqua, bassist Darek Oles, and saxophonist Bob Mintzer. Erskine, Pasqua, and Oles have been performing together for decades, earning a Grammy nomination for their "Live In Italy" recording in 2022.

The addition of Mintzer, an acclaimed composer, arranger, and founding member of the Yellowjackets, elevates the trio to a quartet, enriching their sound and adding depth to their performance.

Murat Aktar, President of Sterling Sound and co-producer of McIntosh SESSIONS, expressed excitement about the partnership with McIntosh, emphasizing the synergy between the two leaders in audio.

“We’re thrilled to partner with McIntosh on the release of SESSIONS Volume 1,” said Murat Aktar. “Bringing together two leaders in the audio category – from equipment to mastering – this album is the ultimate example of how live recordings can translate into authentic at-home listening experiences.”
