JBL has introduced its latest flagship wireless earbuds, the JBL Tour Pro 3, positioning them as a top-tier option in the competitive market of true wireless audio devices. These new earbuds are packed with features designed to enhance sound quality, usability, and convenience, building on the foundation laid by their predecessors, the Tour Pro 2.
At first glance, the JBL Tour Pro 3 retains the aesthetic and form factor of its predecessor, the Tour Pro 2. Available in black and latte color options, the earbuds themselves have not undergone significant changes in shape or size. However, the charging case, a standout feature of the previous generation, has seen notable improvements. The case is now smaller but boasts a 30% larger screen, increasing its functionality without compromising portability.
The screen, which measures 1.57 inches, has been redesigned to offer more customization options and enhanced usability. Users can now personalize the lock screen and home screen wallpapers, even adding images, such as a favorite pet. Practical information like battery life and time is available at a glance, and users can adjust settings such as noise cancellation and EQ presets directly from the case without needing to access their smartphones.
The Tour Pro 3 introduces a new hybrid dual-driver system, replacing the single dynamic driver found in the Tour Pro 2. This setup includes an 11mm dynamic driver for low frequencies paired with a balanced armature driver for higher frequencies, each supported by its own digital-to-analog converter (DAC). This combination promises a broader frequency range (20Hz-40kHz) and more precise sound reproduction, offering improved clarity, depth, and bass response.
Supporting high-resolution audio, the Tour Pro 3 is equipped with Sony’s LDAC Bluetooth codec, a significant upgrade from the previous generation. This codec allows for higher quality streaming from compatible devices, making it an attractive option for audiophiles who demand superior sound performance.
Another key feature is JBL’s “True Adaptive Noise Cancellation,” which customizes the noise-canceling experience based on environmental conditions. This technology continuously monitors the surroundings and adjusts the noise cancellation accordingly, ensuring an optimized listening experience.
In addition, JBL has improved the earbuds' spatial audio capabilities, now incorporating head-tracking technology similar to that found in Apple’s AirPods Pro 2. This feature adds a new dimension to the listening experience, particularly for immersive audio content like movies and games.
The smart charging case is more than just a power source for the earbuds; it’s a multifunctional tool that enhances the overall user experience. One of the most intriguing features of the Tour Pro 3 is the case's ability to act as an audio transmitter.
With the included USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to 3.5mm cables, users can connect the case to devices like gaming consoles or inflight entertainment systems, transmitting audio directly to the earbuds without relying on Bluetooth. This functionality is particularly useful for scenarios where Bluetooth might not be an option.
JBL has also introduced a proprietary 2.4GHz connection between the case and the earbuds when using wired sources. This connection, according to JBL, offers greater stability and lower latency compared to Bluetooth, making it ideal for gaming and video calls. The Tour Pro 3 has also been Zoom-certified when used with the case, highlighting its potential as a versatile tool for professional use.
Battery performance remains robust, with the Tour Pro 3 offering up to 11 hours of playback on a single charge without noise cancellation, and up to 8 hours with ANC activated. The charging case provides an additional 33 hours of battery life, bringing the total potential playback time to 44 hours. This should be sufficient for most users, even on extended trips.
JBL has also addressed some of the criticisms from the previous generation. The Tour Pro 3 features improved call quality thanks to a new “JBL Crystal AI” call algorithm designed to enhance clarity in noisy environments. Additionally, the earbuds now have an IP55 rating for dust and water resistance, making them more durable and suitable for a variety of conditions.
The JBL Tour Pro 3 will be available starting mid-September, with a price tag of $300 (€300 or £280). You can choose between two color options: Black and Latte. In the meantime, you can explore other JBL products at Crutchfield.
