KEF has launched the latest iteration of its Q Series loudspeakers, marking the first major update to this popular lineup in seven years. Known for delivering a blend of affordability and high-performance audio, the new KEF Q Series Meta now includes advanced Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), a feature previously only available in KEF's premium speaker ranges. With prices ranging from $600 to $2,200, this new collection aims to deliver high-fidelity sound to a broader audience.

The updated Q Series, now called the Q Series Meta, consists of eight speaker models designed to cater to various audio setups. These models can function in simple stereo configurations for music enthusiasts or be expanded into full multi-channel home theater systems, including Dolby Atmos capabilities for immersive surround sound.

The speakers in the Q Series Meta lineup include:

  • Q1 Meta: $600 per pair (bookshelf, two-way)
  • Q3 Meta: $800 per pair (bookshelf, two-way)
  • Q Concerto Meta: $1,300 per pair (bookshelf, upgraded to three-way)
  • Q6 Meta: $800 each (center speaker, upgraded to three-way)
  • Q7 Meta: $900 each (floor-standing, upgraded to three-way)
  • Q11 Meta: $1,100 each (floor-standing, upgraded to three-way)
  • Q8 Meta: $800 per pair (height speakers for Dolby Atmos or wall-mounted surrounds)
  • Q4 Meta: $500 each (on-wall speaker)

KEF has maintained the minimalist aesthetic of previous Q Series models, offering finishes in Satin Black, Satin White, and Walnut. Magnetic grilles are now included with the speakers, a feature that was previously sold separately.

The most significant advancement in the new Q Series is the integration of Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). This innovation is designed to eliminate 99% of unwanted sound distortion, especially in high-frequency ranges.

MAT works by incorporating a labyrinthine structure within the speaker's design, where each individual channel absorbs a specific frequency. By functioning as an “acoustic black hole,” this technology reduces distortion, resulting in clearer and more natural sound output.

MAT is not new to KEF's lineup; it has been a prominent feature in some of the brand's higher-end models, including the LS50 Meta and the Reference Series. Its introduction to the Q Series brings this high-end sound technology into a more affordable range of products.

Complementing MAT, KEF's signature Uni-Q driver array has been updated to its 12th generation. This driver places the tweeter in the acoustic center of the midrange driver, allowing sound to radiate more evenly across the room. With MAT enhancing the performance of the Uni-Q array, KEF promises improved sound clarity, accuracy, and detail.

Another significant change in the Q Series Meta is the switch from a two-way to a three-way speaker design in several key models, including the Q7 Meta, Q11 Meta, Q Concerto Meta, and Q6 Meta. In this configuration, the high and midrange frequencies are handled by the Uni-Q driver array, while a dedicated bass driver manages the low frequencies. This separation of frequency ranges is intended to deliver deeper, more defined bass while maintaining clear midrange and treble.

The three-way design is particularly evident in the Q7 Meta and Q11 Meta, both of which are floor-standing models. These speakers are positioned as ideal solutions for larger rooms where a more expansive soundstage and powerful bass are desired. The Q Concerto Meta, a bookshelf speaker, also benefits from the three-way design, making it the first of its kind in the Q Series. This model revives the spirit of KEF’s classic Concerto speaker from 1969, aiming to make high-quality audio more accessible.

In addition to floor-standing and bookshelf models, KEF has expanded the Q Series with more versatile options to accommodate various room configurations. The Q4 Meta, the first on-wall speaker in the series, can be used in a left-center-right (LCR) configuration or as part of a surround sound system. Its compact design makes it ideal for those who want to conserve floor space without compromising audio performance.

For home theater enthusiasts, the Q8 Meta is designed to deliver height channels for Dolby Atmos setups. These speakers can be placed on top of the Q7 or Q11 floor-standing models or wall-mounted for surround sound, adding immersive overhead effects to movie soundtracks.

The Q6 Meta, primarily designed as a center channel speaker, can also be used in an LCR configuration. This flexibility makes it suitable for those seeking a uniform sound profile across the front soundstage of a home theater setup.

The Q Series Meta speakers will be available through Crutchfield and KEF's website starting in late September for the Q Concerto Meta model, with the rest of the lineup becoming available on October 10, 2024. The Q4 Meta and some additional accessories like stands and spike kits will be released later in the winter of 2025.
