LG has unveiled comprehensive pricing and availability for its latest OLED TVs, including its evo OLED C2 and G2 models. LG's OLED Line up is notable for its breadth and depth, encompassing both 4K and 8K, with screen sizes ranging from 42" up to 97". C2 and G2 models get evo OLED panels capable of extra peak brightness, and my in-person experience with those two models convincingly demonstrated that these new LG TVs achieve peak luminance levels that are visibly beyond what their predecessors could reach.
The G2 series achieves the highest brightness and has a premium, wall mount-friendly form factor, but that comes at a cost premium ($500 more for the 65" and 77" models, $1000 extra for the 83") . The G2 also has the most advanced tonemapping LG offers, and it did an excellent job preserving details in extreme highlights that might have been clipped in the past. So, for 2022, there's a legit measurable and visible performance difference between the G2 and C2—in marketing speak it's the "Brightness Booster Max" for the G2 and "Brightness Booster" for the C2 (55" and up)—doing the work, and that in turn is a result of the processing power provided by the a9 Gen5 AI Processor 4K used in these models.
Even if the visible difference between the C2 and G2 picture is not all that large in practice, it exists. But what is large, is the biggest of the G2s, which at 97 inches diagonal (price TBA) offers a home theater size screen with the visual impact of OLED.
Meanwhile, the C2 lineup brings exceptional picture quality and performance to the table, at quite reasonable price points. This series maxes out at 83 inches, but that size is an approachable $5499. What's cool about the C2 series is you can get it in 48" and now also 42" sizes, with the latter having strong potential to serve as a super premium desktop gaming PC monitor. But more generally, there's been a paucity of quality small TVs and the 42" C2 solves that for $1399.
Upon seeing the new OLEDs demonstrated (in person, at LG's U.S. headquarters) I put in a request to review a 65" C2 first and will follow it with the G2. The demos used the Spears & Munsil UHD Benchmark disc that I use as a reference for all of my display reviews, regardless of brand or display type. This gave me a good insight into how the new C2 and G2 handle various HDR scenes.
Needless to say—or maybe it bears repeating—OLED delivers on its promise of superb contrast and accurate color with wide viewing angles, and now HDR highlights have some extra pop to them. That extra HDR intensity does not come into play in every scene but when it's called for, these evo OLEDs deliver the viewing experience that makes OLED the preferred display tech for cinema enthusiasts who crave the near-infinite contrast that truly black blacks get you.
