If you’re someone who cares as much about how your speakers look as how they sound, Monitor Audio has something new to show you. The Studio 89 loudspeakers—first launched in 2024—are now available in a sleek High-Gloss White finish. It’s a clean, modern twist on a design that already turned heads in black, and now it’s just as ready to blend in with a bright, minimalist room as it is to stand out as a centerpiece.
But this isn’t just about looks. Under the surface, the Studio 89 is still very much the same high-performance speaker that earned the Highly Recommended Award from us for delivering big, detailed sound from a compact form.
The new white version doesn’t change any of the audio hardware, but it does offer a different vibe. The white cabinet is paired with Monitor Audio’s distinctive gold-anodized drivers and a hex-pattern grille that gives it a slightly retro-meets-futuristic look. Whether you’re after something that pops visually or something that blends neatly into a modern setup, this version checks both boxes.
And yes, there's a matching stand. Previously only available in black, the Studio 89 stand now comes in white too, with laser-cut steel, aluminum support columns, and options for both carpeted and hard floors—chrome-plated spikes or rubber feet are both included.
If you’ve never heard the Studio 89s before, what stands out is how much sound they produce for their size. They’re compact, but don’t let that fool you—they’re built around a point-source MTM (Mid-Tweeter-Mid) array that uses Monitor Audio’s MPD III tweeter and two 4¼-inch RDT III bass-mid drivers. It’s a setup designed to create a wide, immersive soundstage with strong detail and clarity.
The drivers use a tri-layer structure—aluminum-magnesium outer skin, Nomex honeycomb core, and a woven carbon fibre base. Translation? The cones stay rigid without adding weight, which helps reduce distortion and keep the sound clean. Everything is run through a high-quality third-order crossover, which keeps the different frequencies playing nicely together.
Our Andrew Burns, who reviewed the original Studio 89s for, had high praise for what these speakers could do. He was especially impressed with how much low-end punch they could produce, noting that other small-driver speakers often fall short in that area.
“I've listened to quite a few different speakers with small drivers, and they never had the same heft in the low end, articulacy in the bass and mids, nor the ability to get loud enough to give the neighbors a reason to come knocking on my door,” he wrote in his review.
But he also pointed out something not many speakers pull off: sounding great at low volumes. Some speakers only come alive when cranked up, but the Studio 89s manage to retain detail and depth even when you’re listening quietly. That makes them a solid option for both casual listening and more immersive movie nights.
In fact, Burns mentioned that during his review, he occasionally felt like his surround speakers had kicked in, despite only using the Studio 89s in a stereo setup. That speaks to how well they handle imaging and spatial cues.
The sound quality isn’t just about the drivers. The cabinet itself plays a big role, too. The Studio 89 uses a thick 18mm front baffle and 15mm side walls, with internal bracing to keep things solid and reduce vibration. Airflow is directed through HiVe II slot ports at the top and bottom of the cabinet, helping to reduce noise and keep the bass tight and controlled.
Monitor Audio refers to this approach as their “Transparent Design Philosophy.” The idea is that everything—from the internal tech to the physical appearance—is designed to work together in balance. The result is a speaker that doesn’t color the sound or dominate your room visually, but rather complements both your music and your space.
The new High-Gloss White Studio 89 will be available starting July 2025, priced at $2,500 in the US (£2,000 in the UK / €2,350 in the EU) per pair. The matching Studio 89 Stands will run $625 per pair (£500 / €600), and like before, they’re sold separately.
