Nakamichi has announced the addition of a powerful 12-inch subwoofer to its renowned Dragon home cinema system, marking a significant upgrade that caters to the demands of audiophiles seeking even more impactful bass performance. This new subwoofer represents Nakamichi's response to customer feedback, which highlighted a strong preference for larger, more powerful subs in home theater setups.
The newly introduced 12-inch subwoofer weighs in at a substantial 36kg and features a carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum driver and a 12-inch carbon passive radiator. Together, these components deliver a formidable 750 watts of power, capable of reaching frequencies as low as 19Hz. For comparison, this new model significantly outpaces Nakamichi’s previous offerings, which included 8-inch dual-opposing drivers.
“Dragon owners crave bass intensity that matches the benchmarks set by dedicated high-end home theater setups,” said Nakamichi USA CEO Rayman Cheng in a press release. “This fueled our determination to develop a 12-inch subwoofer that would push Dragon beyond the perceived limitations of plug-and-play home entertainment.”
This subwoofer is designed to integrate seamlessly into the Dragon system, which is already a formidable setup in its own right. The Dragon system is known for its 21 channels, 15 digital amplifiers, six up-firing speakers, and a pair of Omni-Motion Reference Surrounds. With the new 12-inch subwoofer, Nakamichi is pushing the system’s capabilities even further, aiming to offer users an even more immersive audio experience.
One of the main features of this new subwoofer is its modular nature. Nakamichi allows users to add up to four of these 12-inch subs to their Dragon system, creating a setup that delivers an astonishing 5,000 watts of total system power. This configuration is designed for those who crave the intense bass that can match, and even exceed, the benchmarks set by high-end home theater systems.
Nakamichi’s customer survey, which revealed that 67% of respondents preferred subwoofers with a 12-inch or larger driver, and that 41% desired three or more subs in their room, was a driving factor behind the development of this new product. The company clearly aimed to meet the expectations of its most demanding customers, and the result is a subwoofer that promises to deliver bass that is not only heard but felt.
Nakamichi’s Dragon system now offers several configurations to suit different levels of bass intensity and budget. The flagship configuration includes four of the new 12-inch subwoofers, delivering the full 5,000 watts, and is priced at $8,499.99.
For those with more modest needs, a system with two 12-inch subs is available for $5,599.99. The original setup with dual 8-inch subs remains available at a price of $3,999.99 ($3,299.99 currently at Amazon).
For existing Dragon system owners looking to upgrade, individual 12-inch subs can be purchased for $1,499.99 each. This allows users to customize their system according to their specific preferences and room acoustics.
Nakamichi plans to release these new subwoofers and the updated Dragon system configurations on its US web store later this month.
