Blink, Amazon's home security brand, has introduced the Sync Module XR, a new hub aimed at significantly extending the operational range of its Blink Outdoor 4 cameras. This third-generation module allows the cameras to function up to 400 feet away from the base, a substantial increase over previous models. Priced at $59.99, the Sync Module XR is currently available with a limited-time offer that includes a free Blink Outdoor 4 camera.
The main feature of the Sync Module XR is its extended range capability, enabled by Blink’s proprietary long-range radio protocol. The device offers two modes: XR mode, which provides up to 200 feet of range, and XR+ mode, which extends this to 400 feet.
This increase, approximately four times the range of the previous Sync Module, allows users greater flexibility to place cameras at various points across a property. For those with larger yards or additional buildings, such as sheds, gates, or garages, this feature ensures the cameras remain connected, even at a significant distance from the home.
The extended range of the Sync Module XR comes with the ability to penetrate physical obstructions like walls, foliage, and other environmental barriers. However, the range increase does have an impact on video quality, especially at the higher end of the 400-foot range. While the resolution may reduce, the long-range capability is ideal for monitoring areas where details may be less critical, such as observing wildlife or keeping an eye on distant parts of a property.
"We’re always looking for ways to make it easier for our customers to build a comprehensive home security system," said Jonathan Cohn, Head of Product at Blink.
"With Blink Sync Module XR, we're addressing one of the biggest pain points of outdoor cameras—limited Wi-Fi range that restricts where customers can install them. Now Blink Outdoor 4 customers can monitor any corner of their property with reliable connectivity over longer distances."
One of the advantages of the Sync Module XR is its compatibility with all existing Blink Outdoor 4 cameras, allowing users to expand their current security setup without needing to purchase entirely new equipment. Up to ten cameras can be connected to a single Sync Module XR hub, with the XR and XR+ extended range modes applicable to two cameras per module. This setup can be convenient for users looking to secure multiple entry points or remote areas on their property.
The Sync Module XR also enhances Blink’s local storage options, moving from the USB storage of the previous Sync Module 2 to a microSD card, with support for up to 256GB of local storage. This feature allows users to store recordings directly on the module, bypassing the need for cloud storage.
For those who prefer cloud options, Blink does offer a subscription plan at $3 per month, but this remains optional, as local storage provides a straightforward alternative for video clip retention.
Blink’s Outdoor 4 cameras are designed for versatile deployment with a compact, battery-powered, and weather-resistant build. They operate for up to two years on two AA batteries, a duration that can be doubled by adding a battery extension pack.
This long battery life, coupled with the extended range from the Sync Module XR, positions the Blink Outdoor 4 as a practical solution for locations where electrical outlets are not readily available. Whether monitoring a driveway, perimeter, or an outbuilding, the extended connectivity range helps fill gaps in coverage where Wi-Fi struggles to reach.
While some outdoor cameras require LTE-based connections and ongoing subscription fees for remote connectivity, Blink’s new hub addresses a common limitation in the home security market: reaching areas beyond the main Wi-Fi range without incurring additional monthly costs.
The Sync Module XR’s extended radio protocol helps bridge this gap, making it possible to install cameras at remote spots around a property, expanding surveillance options for areas that previously would have required costly solutions.
The Sync Module XR integrates with Blink’s mobile app, allowing users to monitor, arm, and disarm cameras remotely. This centralized control system provides convenience for managing multiple devices simultaneously. For users who have already invested in Blink’s other products, such as the Blink Mini 2, Blink Video Doorbell, or Blink Floodlight Camera, the Sync Module XR supports a cohesive experience, functioning as a hub for these devices without requiring additional modules.
The Blink Sync Module XR is available now through Amazon in the U.S. and Canada. As an introductory offer, Blink is bundling a free Outdoor 4 camera with the Sync Module XR purchase for $59.99. This promotional bundle offers great value for those looking to expand their home security setup in time for the holiday season, especially with Black Friday approaching. Starting in January, the price for the bundle is expected to increase to $139.99.
