Coming fresh out of ISE 2022 in Barcelona, it’s a new speaker from Focal that is specifically designed for optimal dispersion with 3D immersive sound in-ceiling installations. In other words, the 300 ICA6 is a speaker created to work great with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
This is an optimal design for 3D immersive sound applications because the speaker is angled 35 degrees. That means, unlike many in-ceiling speakers, it does not fire straight down, an alignment that creates what Focal refers to as the “shower effect” where the sound is raining down, but not reaching multiple seats or offering optimal dispersion. When you combine rotating the speaker and the angled driver, it gives the audience significant flexibility in aiming the sound.
Of course, these speakers are usable for more than just 3D immersive sound. They may also be used to create hidden sound systems for a virtually invisible multi-room home system that delivers Focal quality.
Speaking of quality, one of the qualities these speakers possess is the flax driver and inverted-dome aluminum-magnesium tweeter. Due to tonal and performance similarities, they work perfectly when combined with Focal’s Aria and Kanta speaker lines. The idea is that you can achieve a wide variety of speaker configurations by selecting from these lines and not worrying about compatibility.
As for pricing and availability, this announcement was timed with the ISE show, but you will have to wait till September 2022 to actually buy them. MSRP is $499.
