SwitchBot has rolled out its Roller Shade, a smart window covering that takes a different approach to motorized blinds. Unlike most smart shades that require you to measure everything perfectly before ordering, these let you adjust the width after you buy them. First introduced in September and later showcased at IFA 2024, the SwitchBot Roller Shade is now available, bringing an easy-to-install, DIY-friendly option to the market.
Getting the perfect size for smart shades can be tricky, but SwitchBot aims to make that process easier. Instead of worrying about precise pre-measuring, the Roller Shade allows users to trim the width between 22.8 inches and 72.8 inches after purchase. This means fewer sizing headaches and more flexibility.
The headrail and fabric are both adjustable, and a cutting tool is included to help with a clean trim. While it’s a great option for those unsure about measurements, it does require a bit of hands-on effort during setup.
The shades come in four sizes, starting at $199.99 for the smallest (22.8 to 31.5 inches) and going up to $309.99 for the extra-large version (55.1 to 72.8 inches). Compared to other smart shades, which often cost upwards of $400, SwitchBot’s offering is a more budget-conscious option.
If you’re deep into smart home tech, these shades should fit right in. They support Matter (via a SwitchBot Hub 2), making them compatible with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and more. Since the shades connect via Bluetooth, you’ll need a SwitchBot Hub 2 to integrate them into a smart home ecosystem and control them remotely.
There are plenty of ways to operate the shades, including:
You can also set automation routines so the shades adjust automatically based on time, temperature, or ambient light. If you want even more convenience, an optional solar panel ($30) can extend battery life and enable light-based automation.
The 2,600mAh battery inside the Roller Shade lasts up to eight months per charge. Charging is simple with a USB-C connection, meaning no need for disposable batteries. If you opt for the solar panel add-on, you can further cut down on the need for frequent recharging.
For those worried about noise, SwitchBot says the motor runs as quietly as 30dB in Silent Mode, which is about as loud as a whisper. That makes these shades a good option for bedrooms and other quiet spaces.
While some brands require you to get precise measurements before ordering, SwitchBot’s adjustable design offers more flexibility—but it does mean you’ll have to do a bit more work at home.
SwitchBot includes a cutting tool to help you resize the shades. Once you adjust the headrail to the correct width, you attach the tool, roll it across the fabric, and trim off the excess. It’s a straightforward process but might take some patience for those unfamiliar with DIY projects.
If you like to change up your decor, SwitchBot’s shades let you swap out the fabric. Available options include 100% blackout fabric, UV-protection fabric, and thermal insulation fabric for temperature control. The only downside? SwitchBot doesn’t currently sell extra fabric directly, so if you want a different look, you’ll need to source the material yourself.
The SwitchBot Roller Shade is available now through SwitchBot’s website, with pricing as follows:
Add-ons include a solar panel ($30) and a wireless remote ($20).
