  • With a passion for home theater, tech, and great sound, Eric writes to inform and inspire. He has a background installing smart homes, home theater, network integration, and all things consumer tech.

We'd like to thank ProjectorScreen.com for their assistance with our projector evaluations and testing. Their yearly shoot-out, extensive selection and helpful attitude makes our life easier when we need to dig in a little more.

When I got my hands on a 120" NothingProjector Black Series Motorized Floor-Rising Screen early this year, I was eager to see if it would solve a problem I've struggled with for years. Like many home theater enthusiasts, I wanted a massive screen experience without permanently sacrificing my wall space or dealing with complicated ceiling installations. After a few months of testing, I can confidently say this innovative screen has transformed how I think about home projection.

While NothingProjector might not be a familiar name to US consumers, they have an established international reputation and a new North America warehouse. I previously reviewed their 132" seamless ALR screen and was once again impressed by how quickly DHL delivered such a large package to my Florida home. Weighing in at nearly 72 pounds and measuring almost 10 feet long, installation might require a couple pairs of hands. Though they primarily sell screens under their brand, NothingProjector also serves as a major distributor for well-known projector brands like Formovie in Europe.

A Design That Disappears When You Don't Need It

Unlike traditional fixed-frame screens that dominate your living space 24/7, this floor-rising design appears only when you're ready to use it. The first thing that struck me was the build quality - the aluminum frame is remarkably heavy and precisely engineered. This isn't some flimsy contraption; it's a serious piece of home theater equipment built to last.

"It's like having a movie theater that materializes on command," I found myself telling friends who came over for movie nights. And I meant it - when not in use, the sleek housing (measuring 111.7" in width and only 6.4" in depth) virtually disappears. While resting the screen housing on the floor works well with its approximately 18" of additional screen material beyond the ALR surface, a dream installation might include a custom media console with a cut-out specifically designed for this housing to achieve optimal viewing height. It looks like NothingProjector agrees, as it appears they've newly released a custom cabinet called Shore.

The Evolution of Projection Screens in My Space

To fully appreciate what makes this screen special, some context is helpful. I've been using ultra-short throw (UST) projectors for the past couple of years, specifically the Xgimi Aura 2 UST for this test. These projectors sit just inches from the wall rather than across the room, but they require specialized screens designed for their extreme projection angles to perform optimally.

I've been using a motorized retractable ceiling screen, but over time I've encountered frustrating screen rippling in the upper corners. The ceiling retractable has been both noisy and slow, falling short of expected performance.

In contrast, the NothingProjector floor-rising screen has impressed at every turn. Its operation is remarkably smooth, taking about 25 seconds to fully deploy. What fascinated me most was the ingenious mechanism behind the screen tension. The metal folding arms provide precisely the right amount of spring tension, creating a perfect opposing force against the unrolling screen. This tension system keeps the screen absolutely taut with no wrinkles or waviness, even in those corner areas where my current screen struggles.

ALR Screen Technology

The screen utilizes what's called a "sawtooth microstructure" - essentially a precisely engineered surface with microscopic ridges that control exactly how light reflects. I was skeptical about this claim until I conducted side-by-side comparisons with my standard white screen using the same projector. The difference was dramatic and immediately noticeable.

With 95% ambient light rejection capability, this screen delivers impressive performance even in my bright living room. During daytime testing, I could still enjoy vibrant, contrast-rich images without needing to draw all the curtains - something my previous screen never achieved.

Inside the sleek housing, several premium components work together seamlessly:

  • Premium aluminum extrusions
  • Tab-tensioning system that maintains perfect flatness
  • Motor mechanism that produces only moderate noise that isn't distracting
  • Perforated acoustic surface that allows sound to pass through

That last point deserves special mention - I discovered that the lower section of the screen, below the main ALR material, is acoustically transparent. This thoughtful design allowed me to position my soundbar perfectly beneath the image area without any audio degradation. For those with in-wall speakers, this feature is equally valuable.

Installation and Safety Considerations

The package includes sturdy mounting brackets that can slide anywhere along the length of the metal housing, making installation remarkably straightforward compared to ceiling-recessed screens that often require professional help. The unit simply sits on the floor against your wall, with slide-out feet providing stability.

While the screen and housing are heavy enough to stand freely, I strongly recommend using the included brackets to secure the screen to your mounting surface - this proved to be an important safety precaution, especially given the substantial weight of the unit. Speaking of safety, one concern I noted is the potential for children to get fingers pinched during the closing mechanism. I would definitely recommend adult supervision when operating the screen in homes with young children.

The remote control handles deployment and retraction effectively, though I eventually opted to use the included USB dongle to integrate with my projector and sound equipment. This integration allows the screen to open automatically when the projector is powered on, creating a seamless viewing experience.

Real-World Performance That Delivered

During my extensive testing with the Xgimi Aura 2 UST projector, the screen consistently impressed with its ability to maintain image quality even in challenging lighting conditions. The 0.6 gain might sound low if you're familiar with traditional screens, but it's actually optimal for UST projectors, which output tremendous brightness at short distances.

The first thing I noticed was how much deeper the blacks appeared compared to projecting on my old screen. Dark scenes in movies like "Dune" retained detail that simply washed out on my previous screen. The 170° viewing angle proved to be no exaggeration. Even when friends sat at extreme side positions during movie nights, colors remained consistent and brightness drop-off was minimal - a common weakness in other ALR screens I've tested.

One subtle but important aspect was the screen's ability to reject ceiling light specifically. My living room uses recessed ceiling lights, which typically wash out projector images. The directional rejection properties of this screen showed remarkable effectiveness against my overhead lighting while still accepting the projector's light from below. This screen features a finer sawtooth pattern than my previous ALR, rejecting light more effectively while delivering a higher-fidelity appearance due to its increased smoothness.

Value

After living with this screen for three months, what impresses me most is the material and construction quality relative to the price point. If you had told me this screen cost twice what they charge, I wouldn't bat an eye. The engineering precision, particularly in the tensioning system, is something I've only seen in screens at much higher price points.

The motor noise is average - not whisper-quiet but certainly not obnoxious either. It's a reasonable compromise given all the other premium features. Considering you get both remotes and USB integration, a premium screen material, and substantial heft and build quality, it delivers on all essential fronts.

Final Thoughts: A Glimpse of the Future

After extensive testing and comparing notes with other users online, it's clear the NothingProjector Black Series Motorized Floor-Rising Screen represents more than just another projection accessory - it's a glimpse into how home entertainment can seamlessly integrate into modern living spaces.

While it's not the cheapest option available, its performance, versatility, and build quality deliver exceptional value for anyone serious about large-screen entertainment. The technical refinements make it particularly well-suited to today's high-performance UST projectors like my Xgimi Aura 2, extracting maximum visual impact from these devices.

Perhaps most telling is how quickly my family forgot we were watching a projection rather than a massive TV - the ultimate compliment for any display technology. As living spaces continue to evolve and multi-use rooms become the norm rather than the exception, solutions like this that combine disappearing hardware with uncompromising performance seem destined to become the new standard in home entertainment.
