Picking the best TVs of 2024 wasn’t easy, but it sure was fun. This year has been packed with incredible advancements, from brighter OLEDs to Mini LEDs that deliver stunning HDR performance at prices that make your wallet breathe a little easier.
After testing and experiencing these models firsthand, I’ve put together a list that highlights not just the best overall displays but also the ones that offer exceptional value and improvements. From game-changing innovations like the LG G4 OLED to the incredible value of the TCL QM7, this list represents the TVs that truly stood out this year.
The LG G4 is something of a masterpiece, and it's definitely my favorite TV of 2024. Not only do you get the inky blacks, super fast response times, and per pixel local dimming of OLED, but LG has stepped things up this year by increasing the refresh rate to 144Hz, and finally fixing low color luminance in game mode making this likely the best gaming display of 2024.
It's also in my opinion the best overall display for film buffs as it goes toe to toe with TVs like the legendary Sony A95L, but LG has one big advantage. They not only have a clear glossy coating, but unlike QD OLED LG has far fewer issues with the screen lighting up magenta or grey when hit with ambient light.
This makes the LG G4 the best bright room OLED in my opinion, and overall the best OLED money can buy. Additionally, LG has been aggressively reducing prices making it far more appealing today than it was at launch. If you’re looking for the best in 2024, this is it.
The TCL QM7 isn’t the best TV of the year or even the best Mini LED, but it’s easily the best value. Not only does it bring respectable HDR imagery that would be a huge improvement over an older non Mini LED LCD display, but with prices at less than $1,000 for some models it's unbelievably good in terms of its price to performance. This is a TV that punches way above its weight and surprisingly even has good accuracy out of the box. If you’re looking for the best value HDR TV the TCL QM7 is hands down it.
If you like the TCL QM7 you’ll love the QM8. Everything the QM7 does, the QM8 does a little better. Well except HDR accuracy, but that's easy to fix in the menu, and with much higher brightness, more dimming zones for better contrast, and an overall more impactful HDR image TCL has a real winner on their hands once again bringing excellent price to performance. Now it’s not quite as good of value as the QM7, but it's probably the second best value Mini LED you can buy in 2024.
The Sony Bravia 9 I have a complicated relationship with. I absolutely love this TV. I love what it represents, and more importantly, I love the picture it produces. It does everything a TV like the QM8 does, but better. Brighter real HDR scenes, much better viewing angles, better accuracy, better software, etc.
You name it, the Bravia 9 probably nails it. Yet as good as it is, it still falls short of the contrast, viewing angles, speed, and refresh rate of pretty much any modern OLED, and with a higher price, this is why I have mixed feelings on this one. Ultimately this is likely the best bright room TV, and I definitely can recommend it for that, but it desperately needs a price drop.
The Hisense 85U8N is a TV that started out too expensive, but by the fourth quarter of 2024, it dropped so far below its MSRP that it's now one of the best value 85” Mini LEDs you can buy. Not only that, but it's still the best Mini LED TV I’ve measured in terms of contrast.
If you want a high contrast, bright Mini LED for an affordable price I can highly recommend the 85U8N, and the 75” may be even better as it should come with an ADS Pro panel which should lead to far better viewing angles, though the contrast may suffer, so definitely be sure to check which panel each size has before making a decision on what to buy.
