Oppo BDP-80 Blu-ray Player Reviewed

Oppo Digital has released a lower-priced alternative to its acclaimed BDP-83 and BDP-83SE. The BDP-80 ($289) is a universal disc player that supports the Blu-ray, SACD, DVD-Audio, and HDCD formats. It lacks a streaming video-on-demand service like Netflix or Amazon VOD.

Blu-ray-BDP-80_review.gifYou're probably already familiar with Oppo Digital's BDP-83 and BDP-83SE (Special Edition) Blu-ray players, both of which have been reviewed on this site. The company also offers a slightly scaled-back model called the BDP-80 that shares many features with its higher-end brethren but is priced at just $289. We have not performed a hands-on review of the BDP-80, but here is an overview of its features. Like the 83 and 83SE, the BDP-80 is a universal disc player that--in addition to Blu-ray, DVD, and CD audio--supports the SACD, DVD-Audio, and HDCD formats.

This Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player offers BD-Live Web functionality and BonusView/picture-in-picture playback, and it offers both onboard decoding and bitstream output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The primary differences between the BDP-80 and the BDP-83 are that the entry-level model lacks the dedicated stereo audio output, IR in/out ports, and optional RS-232 port, and it does not use the higher-end Anchor Bay VRS processing chip. The BDP-80 does not support any type of video-on-demand streaming or download service, such as those offered by Netflix, Amazon, and CinemaNow.

In terms of video connections, the BDP-80 offers HDMI, component video, S-video, and composite video outputs. This player supports both 1080p/60 and 1080p/24 output resolutions via HDMI, and it includes a Source Direct mode that outputs all discs at their native resolution. Picture adjustments include the ability to choose between preset picture modes and to adjust brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and sharpness. Other features include subtitle shift and a vertical stretch mode designed for use with a projector/anamorphic lens combo. Audio outputs include HDMI, optical and coaxial digital, and a multichannel analog output that can be configured for 7.1, 5.1, or 2 channels. The BDP-80 has onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, and it also passes these high-resolution audio formats in their native bitstream form over HDMI, for your A/V receiver to decode. You can set the speaker size, distance, and level for the mutichannel outputs. The player's Pure Audio mode turns off the video circuitry to offer a higher level of audio performance.

The BDP-80 supports playback of BD, DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, CD audio,
HDCD, AVCHD, JPEG, and MP3. A back-panel Ethernet port is available for
quick firmware updates and accessing BD-Live Web features; the BDP-80
does not have built-in WiFi for network connectivity. It does offer 1GB
of internal memory to store BD-Live content, and dual USB ports are
also provided for additional storage. These USB ports also support
music, photo and movie playback. The player lacks advanced control
ports, such as RS-232 or IR.

High Points
• This universal disc player also supports playback of SACD and DVD-Audio music discs, as well as AVCHD, HDCD, JPEG, and MP3.
• The BDP-80 supports 1080p/24 playback of Blu-ray discs.
• The player has internal high-resolution audio decoding and can pass
these formats in bitstream form over HDMI. It has multichannel analog
audio outputs for use with older A/V receivers.
• It supports BD-Live Web content and can play picture-in-picture bonus content.
• The Source Direct mode allows you to output all discs at their native resolution via HDMI.
• Dual USB ports allow for easy playback of digital movies, music and photos.

Low Points
• This player does not support video-on-demand or media streaming.
• The BDP-80 lacks a wireless option for connection to your home network.
• This player doesn't use the higher-end video processor found in the BDP-83, and it lacks an advanced control port like RS-232.

Conclusion
Oppo has earned a reputation for serving up high-quality players for a
reasonable price, and the BDP-80 is a great choice for someone who
wants most of the features found in the pricier BDP-83 but does not
need the higher-end Anchor Bay VRS processing chip or control ports.
Oppo has not yet embraced the Web and media-streaming features you can
find in other similarly priced models; so, if those perks are important
to you, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, for disc enthusiasts
who have assembled a large movie and music collection in a variety of
formats, the BDP-80 is the best deal in town.
