Philips is set to release its latest product in home entertainment with the Screeneo UL5 Smart, an ultra-short-throw (UST) triple-laser projector. Following the success of its predecessors, the U4 and U5 models, Philips is turning to crowdfunding once again via Indiegogo for the launch of this new projector. The Screeneo UL5 Smart promises a range of features that aim to enhance the viewing experience for home users, despite some compromises compared to earlier models.
The Screeneo UL5 Smart marks a shift from the 4K resolution offered by the previous U5 model, reverting to a Full HD 1080p resolution. This decision aligns the UL5 more closely with the U4 in terms of resolution. The projector uses a Digital Light Processing (DLP) unit with a 0.23-inch DMD chip, working alongside a triple-laser light source. This setup includes separate lasers for red, blue, and green colors, providing a richer color output.
The UL5 has a throw ratio of 0.23:1, which allows it to project images ranging from 35 inches to 120 inches diagonally. For optimal contrast and brightness, Philips recommends keeping the projection size up to 100 inches. The projector can be positioned as close as 7.2 inches from the projection surface to achieve the minimum image size, and up to 24 inches for larger displays.
One notable limitation of the Screeneo UL5 Smart is its brightness, which peaks at 550 ANSI lumens. This makes it more suitable for dark room environments, as it may struggle in well-lit settings. However, the projector should compensate with impressive color performance. It covers 200% of the Rec.709 color gamut, 108% of the Rec.2020, and 150% of the cinematic DCI-P3 color space. Additionally, it supports HDR10, which enhances the dynamic range and color depth for compatible content.
The UL5 is designed with portability in mind, though it is not battery-operated and requires a wall outlet for power. The projector's compact dimensions of 8.11 x 3.7 x 3.4 inches and weight of 2.3 pounds make it easy to move and set up in different locations. Its versatility extends to its ability to project images on floors or desks when positioned vertically, making it useful for various applications beyond just home entertainment.
Running on the Android-compatible LuminOS operating system, the Screeneo UL5 Smart comes pre-loaded with popular streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney Plus, and YouTube. The device also includes dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2, allowing for wireless connectivity to external speakers or other devices.
For wired connections, the UL5 offers a range of ports: one HDMI 2.1 port, a USB Type-A power port, and two USB-C ports (one of which supports data and video). The projector also features a pair of 3-watt Dolby speakers, providing built-in audio capabilities.
Philips is preparing to launch the Screeneo UL5 Smart through an Indiegogo campaign, offering the projector at a discounted pre-order price of €699 (approximately $750). This represents a significant reduction from the expected retail price of around $1,400. While crowdfunding campaigns inherently carry some risk, Philips' established reputation in the projector market provides some reassurance to potential backers.
Shipping for the Screeneo UL5 Smart is expected to begin in July for early backers, with wider availability anticipated by October. The crowdfunding campaign offers a limited-time opportunity for consumers to acquire the projector at a reduced price, with potential additional costs for shipping and VAT.
