Popcornflix and sister app FrightPix are using the elimination of the paywall as a way to get into more households. Popcornflix is free, but is ad-supported.

Popcornflix, the ad-supported movie streaming service, is heralding Microsoft's recent decision not to require a $59 membership to Xbox Live Gold to access third-party apps. A subscription is still required to access proprietary content and gaming.

With more than 20 million Xbox users in North America, Popcornflix eyes a surge in eyeballs to streaming platform and FrightPix (which focuses on horror films) -- both of which are available on Xbox.

The two services are owned by Screen Media Ventures LLC, which also operates Popcornflix-KIDS and Popcornflix Comedy.

"We're thrilled to see Microsoft tearing down the Xbox Live Gold pay wall, giving their users access to Popcornflix's large library of popular films," David Fannon, EVP of Popcornflix, said in a statement.

Popcornflix ended 2013 with its app downloaded more than 5 million times, according to Screen Media, which distributes films worldwide to television stations, cable networks and home video outlets.

Screen Media last year bowed FrightPix on Roku. Last summer it released an Android app that is compatible with smartphones, tablets and optimized for Android 4.0 and higher operating systems. The free app is currently available for download in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France and Scandinavia.
