Pro-Ject has just raised the bar in turntable technology with The Classic Reference, a turntable crafted for pure audio clarity.

Pro-Ject Unveils The Classic Reference Turntable: A Special Edition with High-End Features

Pro-Ject Audio Systems has unveiled The Classic Reference, a special edition turntable that brings together high-performance elements from its well-regarded Classic EVO and the VPO 175, a model originally created to celebrate the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s 175th anniversary. This new model is aimed at discerning vinyl enthusiasts, combining a variety of Pro-Ject's advanced design features to create a turntable that’s rich in both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The Classic Reference is constructed with components designed to minimize resonance and increase stability during playback. Its tonearm, the EVO 9 AS HG, incorporates Swiss ABEC 7 bearings, renowned for their high precision. This setup includes four stainless steel tips in an aluminum gimbal structure, which aids in steady, low-resonance performance.

Additionally, the S-shaped tonearm has internal damping, a feature that’s intended to reduce vibration, thereby enhancing playback fidelity. The removable headshell is a practical inclusion that enables users to switch cartridges, catering to listeners who prefer different sound profiles based on their cartridges.

The aluminum record platter, another crucial element in this design, has been damped with Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE), a material chosen to reduce unwanted resonances.

The damped underside and high mass of the platter work together to maintain rotational stability, which Pro-Ject claims eliminates the ringing effect seen in some turntables. The belt-driven platter operates on an aluminum sub-platter, further stabilizing the rotation and ensuring consistent playback quality.

The Classic Reference is designed to accommodate high-end audio systems, integrating both RCA and balanced XLR outputs. These connectivity options allow users to connect the turntable to phono stages or other audio equipment with minimal interference.

The XLR outputs, often found in professional audio setups, enable balanced transmission, potentially reducing noise and interference. This level of connection flexibility makes the turntable adaptable to a range of audio configurations, whether for home listening or more professional environments.

Pro-Ject has also designed a power supply system specific to the needs of its turntables. This DC/AC generator ensures that the turntable’s AC motor receives steady power while isolating the device from potential fluctuations in the main power source.

The Classic Reference’s power allocation includes a dedicated 15V output for the turntable and an 18-20V output for a phono preamp, allowing users to power their setup from a single source without additional cabling, which could otherwise introduce noise or signal disruption.

Included with The Classic Reference are accessories aimed at enhancing the user experience and reducing resonance. Pro-Ject provides both a Clamp it record clamp and a Leather it record mat with each turntable, intended to minimize vibrations and stabilize records during playback. These additions support Pro-Ject’s focus on delivering a stable and immersive listening experience by adding extra layers of resonance control.
