Pro-Ject has introduced the Debut Evo 2, an evolution of its popular Debut Carbon Evo model. The Debut Evo 2, now the focal point of the company's Debut line, offers several enhancements aimed at providing a more refined listening experience while maintaining a balance between affordability and high-end audio performance.
The Pro-Ject Debut series, first introduced in the late 1990s, has established itself as a staple in the vinyl enthusiast community. Known for its minimalist design and audiophile-grade components, the Debut series has remained a popular choice for those looking to elevate their vinyl listening experience without venturing into the high-end price bracket.
The Debut Evo 2 continues this tradition, building on the legacy of its predecessors with updates inspired by Pro-Ject's more advanced models, particularly the Debut Pro.
Replacing the Debut Carbon Evo, the Debut Evo 2 incorporates several key upgrades while retaining the design philosophy that made the series popular. The new model continues to feature the belt-drive system and electronic speed control, allowing users to switch between 33 1/3 and 45 RPM records with ease. However, those interested in playing 78 RPM records will need to purchase an additional pulley and belt.
One of the most significant changes in the Debut Evo 2 is the introduction of a new non-magnetic aluminum platter. This upgrade is borrowed from the higher-end Debut Pro model and replaces the steel platter found in the previous Carbon Evo.
The aluminum platter is not only lighter but also includes a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) ring designed to reduce unwanted resonances, resulting in a cleaner sound. The non-magnetic nature of the platter also makes the turntable compatible with moving coil (MC) cartridges, offering users more flexibility in upgrading their audio setup.
Another notable enhancement is the tonearm, which remains an 8.6-inch one-piece carbon fiber design but is now mounted in a precision-milled aluminum block with low-friction bearings. This setup, also derived from the Debut Pro, should ensure more precise tracking of records and contribute to the overall improvement in sound quality.
The Debut Evo 2 comes pre-fitted with the new Pick It MM Evo moving magnet cartridge, co-designed with Ortofon, a well-respected name in the cartridge industry. This cartridge is optimized for the turntable's tonearm, providing a balanced and detailed audio performance right out of the box. For those looking to experiment with different cartridges, the turntable's compatibility with MC cartridges due to the non-magnetic platter is a welcome addition.
The chassis of the Debut Evo 2 has also seen an upgrade. The MDF plinth has been re-engineered with a new machining process that integrates the RCA/power junction box directly into the chassis.
This redesign not only streamlines the turntable's appearance but also minimizes air pockets that could affect performance, providing a more stable platform for vinyl playback. The height-adjustable metal feet, now with TPE damping, further enhance the turntable's ability to isolate vibrations, ensuring a clearer sound.
Pro-Ject has always offered a variety of finishes for its Debut models, and the Evo 2 is no exception. The turntable is available in ten different finishes, giving users the flexibility to choose a style that suits their personal taste and home décor. The available finishes include six satin options, such as the new Satin Wine Red, three high gloss finishes, and a real wood walnut veneer.
While the Debut Evo 2 does not come with a built-in phono preamp, it is compatible with a range of external preamps, including Pro-Ject's own Phono Box S3 B and Phono Box DS3 B, which are designed to complement the turntable's performance.
The Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2 is priced at $699, a $100 increase over its predecessor, the Debut Carbon Evo. Despite the price increase, the enhancements in materials and technology position the Evo 2 as a strong contender in the mid-range turntable market. The turntable is available for purchase through Pro-Ject's website and authorized retailers, such as Crutchfield.
