Pro-Ject Audio Systems has introduced the latest model in its extensive lineup of turntables, the Pro-Ject XA B, which aims to offer superior sound quality through a combination of high-quality components and innovative design. This new addition to the X Line series is positioned above the Debut Pro and the newer Debut Pro B models, with a price point of $1499.
The Pro-Ject XA B stands out due to its acrylic plinth, a design choice intended to leverage the material's damping qualities. This feature helps minimize unwanted vibrations, thus contributing to a cleaner sound output.
The use of acrylic in turntable construction has been part of Pro-Ject’s approach for many years, with previous models like the 6.9 Perspective and 6PerspeX incorporating the material. These models have showcased the benefits of acrylic, although achieving the right balance in sound quality has been a challenge, given that acrylic can sometimes overly dampen sound.
To counteract any potential over-damping, the Pro-Ject XA B is equipped with a 10-inch aluminium tonearm and a precision-balanced aluminium platter. The tonearm features an ultra-low friction Kardan four pin-point bearing assembly, which ensures stable and accurate tracking. This setup is complemented by the Pick It Pro Balanced moving magnet cartridge, pre-installed to enhance the turntable's dynamic and detailed sound signature.
A notable feature of the XA B is its incorporation of Pro-Ject’s "True Balanced" technology. This technology, also seen in other models like the X1 B and X2 B, includes a Mini XLR balanced output.
This output is designed to reduce noise and interference, delivering a purer audio signal. The Pro-Ject XA B comes with a high-quality phono-optimized cable, although users can upgrade to a True Balanced cable for enhanced performance with a compatible phono stage.
The aluminium platter of the XA B is further enhanced with a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) ring, which helps dampen resonances and reduce distortion. This feature, along with the included Record Puck E weight, provides additional stability by securing the record against the platter. The belt-driven turntable supports electronic speed changes between 33⅓ and 45 RPM, accommodating different types of vinyl records.
Pro-Ject has also paid attention to the power supply of the XA B, using a built-in DC/AC generator to ensure clean and stable power to the motor. This design choice is intended to create a precise sine wave, enhancing speed stability and overall performance. Despite using a relatively inexpensive switch-mode power supply, Pro-Ject assures that the internal generator compensates for any potential shortcomings.
The Pro-Ject XA B is designed with practical features to improve user experience. It includes damped, height-adjustable feet to increase stability on uneven or resonant surfaces, effectively isolating the turntable from environmental vibrations. The package also comes with a dust cover, a felt mat, and Pro-Ject's Connect It E Phono cable.
In terms of aesthetics, the transparent acrylic chassis of the XA B provides a modern, minimalist look, appealing to both audiophiles and design enthusiasts. This visual appeal is complemented by careful engineering to ensure that the turntable not only looks good but also performs well.
The inclusion of adjustable azimuth and vertical tracking angle (VTA) settings allows users to fine-tune the tonearm setup, optimizing performance for different cartridges.
The Pro-Ject XA B is currently available for pre-order at Crutchfield, with shipments expected to begin soon. With its combination of high-quality materials, innovative technology, and thoughtful design, the XA B aims to deliver a high-fidelity listening experience, making it a notable addition to Pro-Ject’s lineup of turntables.
