Rega's Iconic Turntable Just Got a Major Upgrade—Rega Planar 3 RS Edition Arrives!

Rega has unveiled the Planar 3 RS Edition, a special version of its iconic turntable. Building on the legacy of the original Planar 3, which debuted in the mid-1970s, the RS Edition introduces upgraded components and premium features aimed at enhancing audio performance while retaining the hallmark simplicity and elegance of the design.

The Planar 3 RS Edition features a high-pressure laminate (HPL) plinth, a significant departure from the standard model. This material, often reserved for Rega’s higher-end models like the Planar 6, Planar 8, and Planar 10, ensures increased rigidity and reduces unwanted resonance.

The plinth’s lightweight core, reinforced with phenolic resin, supports Rega’s double-brace system for additional structural integrity in critical areas such as the tonearm mounting and hub bearing.

The exterior is finished in a dark brushed aluminum satin, complemented by high-gloss black edging. A smoked dust cover adds to the turntable's modern aesthetic, making it as visually striking as it is functional.

One of the RS Edition’s key features is the factory-fitted Nd5 moving-magnet cartridge. This premium cartridge, with its elliptical nude stylus, is a notable upgrade compared to the standard Planar 3, which is sold without a pre-installed cartridge. Individually priced at $675, the Nd5 cartridge ensures precise and detailed audio playback, meeting the demands of audiophiles.

Additionally, the RB330 precision tonearm, included in the RS Edition, offers smooth and accurate performance. It works seamlessly with the Nd5 cartridge to deliver a refined listening experience.

The Planar 3 RS Edition is powered by a 24-volt low-noise motor, which connects to the Neo MK2 PSU. This external power supply offers speed control and an anti-vibration circuit, both tailored to the specific motor of each unit. The combination of a CNC-machined custom pulley and the Rega Reference EBLT drive belt ensures consistent rotation, driving the 12mm float glass platter.

Unlike traditional belt-driven turntables that require manual adjustment for speed changes, the RS Edition’s Neo PSU enables easy switching between 33 rpm and 45 rpm speeds without removing the platter.
