Ruark Audio has given its long-running MR1 desktop speakers a fresh update. The new MR1 Mk3 keeps the same familiar look but adds a bunch of upgrades under the hood. First launched in 2013 and updated again in 2017, the MR1 series has always balanced style and sound in a compact package. Now, with the Mk3 version—priced at £399 / $579 / AU$899—Ruark is aiming to make these small speakers even more versatile.
At a glance, the MR1 Mk3 doesn’t look drastically different from the older models. The cabinet still has that clean, minimalist design that fits neatly on a desk or shelf. But inside, quite a bit has changed.
Ruark slightly enlarged the speaker enclosure to make space for new 85mm bass/mid drivers and 20mm silk dome tweeters. The goal? Better bass and clearer sound, especially in small to medium rooms. They've also brought over an upgraded Class D amplifier from their R410 system, which helps the Mk3s handle more dynamic audio with improved control across the frequency range.
Ruark says the speakers now cover a frequency range of 50Hz to 22kHz, which is impressive considering their size.
One of the biggest changes is how you can hook the MR1 Mk3 up to your gear. A new USB audio input means you can plug them directly into a computer and play high-resolution audio without needing a separate DAC or interface. For anyone working from home, or using them at a desk, that’s a nice convenience.
The Bluetooth has also been upgraded. Now with aptX HD and low-latency support, the Mk3s can stream higher-quality audio and stay in sync better with video—handy if you’re watching movies or playing games. You’ll also find an optical input, a 3.5mm aux port, and a dedicated phono input with adjustable gain, making it turntable-ready right out of the box.
If you want more low-end rumble for movies or music, there’s a subwoofer output as well. Ruark recommends pairing the MR1 Mk3 with its RS1 subwoofer, but it should work with most third-party models.
Ruark has stuck with its signature handcrafted wooden cabinets, available in Rich Walnut or Charcoal Lacquer finishes. The new Slate Grey fabric grilles add a slightly more modern contrast, and the beveled front edges make the speakers feel a little sleeker overall.
In terms of size, the MR1 Mk3 remains compact: 185mm tall, 135mm wide, and 155mm deep. That makes them small enough to blend into most spaces, whether they’re living on a work desk, bookshelf, or beside a TV. Controls are simple, too: you get a small remote, and one of the speakers has a dial on top for easy access to volume and input switching.
One thing the MR1 Mk3 doesn’t include is Wi-Fi connectivity. That means no built-in streaming services, multi-room audio, or app control. For some, especially those looking at networked speakers like the Sonos Era 300, this might be a drawback, particularly at this price point.
But if you’re not looking for smart features and just want a flexible speaker that can handle analog, digital, and Bluetooth sources, the MR1 Mk3 still covers a lot of ground.
