McIntosh has introduced the MIP200 Power Controller, a new product designed to protect premium home audio systems from electrical disruptions. This device is built to shield valuable audio components from power surges, overvoltage incidents, and brownouts, offering a comprehensive solution for audio enthusiasts who want to safeguard their equipment against unexpected power issues.
The MIP200 Power Controller stands out with its advanced power protection features. At its core is a thermally protected metal-oxide varistor (TPMOV), which is a significant improvement over standard metal-oxide varistors (MOVs).
This component is designed to address common failure modes associated with traditional MOVs, providing enhanced surge protection. In addition to surge protection, the MIP200 includes electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering, which helps to reduce noise and interference that can affect audio performance.
Another critical feature of the MIP200 is its programmable over/under voltage protection. When the unit detects unsafe voltage levels, it automatically shuts off power to the connected outlets, only restoring power once conditions are deemed safe. This functionality provides an extra layer of security, ensuring that audio components are not exposed to damaging power fluctuations.
Designed with versatility, the MIP200 Power Controller can accommodate various global power standards. It offers a choice between 4 Type B (NEMA 5-15R) outlets with two receptacles each, or 4 Type F (CEE 7/3, commonly known as Schuko) outlets with a single receptacle each. This flexibility makes the MIP200 suitable for use in different regions and compatible with a wide range of audio equipment.
The MIP200 also includes an always-on, unswitched outlet that ensures continuous power to critical components, while the remaining outlets can be managed in several ways.
Users can control these outlets via the front panel, through remote operation using the rear panel Power Control or RS232 ports, or by configuring them as additional always-on outlets. Each outlet has programmable delays to minimize inrush current, a feature that helps to prevent tripping circuit breakers and ensures a safe startup for all connected devices.
The MIP200 is designed for easy integration into custom home theater or whole-home audio systems. It features a 2U rack-mountable form factor, which saves space and maintains a clean, organized system layout.
This design is particularly advantageous for those with complex audio setups that include McIntosh’s range of amplifiers and A/V processors. By fitting seamlessly into these systems, the MIP200 not only enhances functionality but also aligns with the aesthetic standards associated with McIntosh products.
The front panel of the MIP200 provides an AC line monitor, which delivers real-time data on input voltage, current draw, and total apparent power. This feature allows users to have precise control over their system’s power supply, making it easier to manage and maintain their audio equipment.
The MIP200’s exterior design includes McIntosh’s signature black glass front panel, aluminum trim, illuminated logo, and aluminum control knobs, which contribute to its luxurious appearance.
The McIntosh MIP200 Power Controller will be available starting September 12 through authorized McIntosh dealers. It comes with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $3,000, $4,200 CAD, €3,995, or £3,795.
