Samsung_UN46D6300_LED_HDTV_review.jpgSamsung's UND6300 Series is a mid-level series in the company's 2011 LED line. We have not performed a hands-on review of the UN46D6300, but here is an overview of its features. This 46-inch, 1080p TV lacks the 3D capability found in the higher-end LED lines (D6400-D8000), but it still offers a strong features package that includes the Smart Hub Web platform with a Web browser and Search All function, optional WiFi, and DLNA/AllShare media streaming. The Smart Hub service includes access to Netflix, VUDU, Blockbuster, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Pandora, Facebook, Twitter, and many more options offered through the Samsung Apps store. This TV lacks the integrated WiFi and Skype capability you'll get with step-up models.

The UN46D6300 uses edge LED lighting; it does not add the Micro Dimming technology that allows the LED zones to adjust themselves independently to improve black-level and screen uniformity. Clear Motion Rate 240 technology is onboard to reduce motion blur and film judder. The connection panel includes four HDMI inputs (all side-facing), one component video input (a single mini-jack with a supplied adapter cable), one PC input, and one RF input to access the internal ATSC and Clear-QAM tuners (limited PIP is available). Three USB ports are included for media playback, as well as the addition of the optional LinkStick WiFi adapter ($79.99). An Ethernet port is available for a wired network connection. The UN46D6300 lacks an RS-232 or IR port for integration into an advanced control system. This TV has an attractive design, with a graphite finish and a depth of just 1.2 inches.

The setup menu offers a thorough assortment of video adjustments, including: an adjustable backlight; shadow detail; gamma; flesh tone; edge enhancement; digital and MPEG noise reduction; four color-temperature presets, plus RGB offset/gain and 10p white balance controls to precisely adjust color temperature; and three color-space options, including a custom mode in which you can individually adjust red, green, and blue. The Expert Pattern and RGB Only modes are designed to assist with the video-setup process. Clear Motion Rate 240 includes settings for off, clear, standard, and smooth, plus a custom mode in which you can separately adjust the blur and judder functions. There's also an LED Motion Plus control that reduces motion blur by flashing the LED lighting system. The UN46D6300 has eight aspect ratios, including a Screen Fit mode that displays images with no overscan.

On the audio side, the TV's setup menu includes five preset sound modes, a five-band equalizer for use with the Standard sound mode, SRS TruSurround HD, SRS TruDialog to improve vocal clarity, and an Auto Volume function that reduces level variations between TV shows and commercials.

The UN46D6300's Eco menu includes an Energy Saving mode (with five options) to lower the backlight level, as well as an Eco Sensor that automatically adjusts the picture to suit the room's ambient lighting. You can set up the TV to turn itself off when it has received no signal or no activity for a designated time.

The UN46D6300 has an MSRP of $1,499.99 and a street price around $1,1000.

Samsung_UN46D6300_LED_HDTV_review_profile.jpgHigh Points
• The UN46D6300's edge-lit LED design allows for energy efficiency and a slim cabinet.
• Clear Motion Rate 240 technology effectively reduces motion blur and offers multiple settings to tailor the de-judder effect to your liking.
• LCDs can be very bright, which makes them a good choice for a brightly lit viewing environment.
• The TV has plenty of connection options and picture adjustments.
• The UN46D6300 will support a wired or (optional) wireless network connection.
Samsung's robust Smart Hub platform is available, with a host of video-on-demand, music-on-demand, social-networking, and other services. DLNA media streaming is also supported.

Low Points
• Edge-lit LED-based LCD TVs can suffer from brightness-uniformity issues, and their black levels are generally not as deep as you'll find with LED-based TVs that use local dimming.
• LCD viewing angles are not as good those of a plasma TV.
• The UN46D6300 lacks 3D capability.
• It also lacks an IR or RS-232 port.
• You must pay extra for the WiFi USB adapter.

Competition and Comparison
Compare the Samsung UN46D6300 with its competition by reading the reviews for the Sony KDL-40EX620, LG Infinia 55LV5500, and Philips 46PFL7505D/FF. Learn more about LED-based LCD TVs by visiting our LED HDTV section.

Conclusion
Samsung's UN46D6300 is targeted at the TV consumer who is not interested in 3D capability but desires a great Web platform and a stylish form factor. Samsung's Smart Hub hits all the major bases in terms of video- and music-on-demand services, as well as social networking tools. The lack of local dimming means that this TV may not be the best choice for a theater-oriented TV that will see a lot of movie-watching in a completely dark room, but it's probably well suited for HDTV, casual movie-watching, sports, and gaming.
