Sony has rolled out a significant firmware update for its flagship noise-canceling headphones, the WH-1000XM5. This update brings a host of new features, including head-tracked spatial audio and improved Bluetooth Multipoint functionality, as the company aims to enhance user satisfaction by delivering features that have been well-received in their other products like the WF-1000XM5 wireless earbuds and even rivaling Apple's AirPods Max.

Head-Tracked Spatial Audio

The headlining addition to the WH-1000XM5 is the head-tracked spatial audio capability, previously seen on Sony's WF-1000XM5 earbuds. This feature allows audio to move and adjust based on the user's head movements, creating a more immersive experience while watching videos or playing games.

However, it's important to note that head-tracked spatial audio support is currently limited to select apps and devices. At the moment, it works seamlessly with Netflix and select Android 13 smartphones equipped with head-tracking, such as the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

Enhanced Bluetooth Multipoint Functionality

Another exciting enhancement in this firmware update is the simultaneous support for advanced multi-point Bluetooth and Sony's high-quality LDAC audio codec. Previously, the users had to choose between enabling Bluetooth Multipoint to connect the headphones to two devices simultaneously or enjoying the superior LDAC hi-res Bluetooth codec. Activating one feature would automatically disable the other.

The latest update brings a welcome change, allowing WH-1000XM5 owners to have the best of both worlds. Users can now retain LDAC enabled while enjoying the convenience of connecting to multiple devices simultaneously. This enhancement means users can have a high-quality music streaming experience, thanks to LDAC, while seamlessly switching between their connected devices, such as a smartphone and a laptop.

Getting the Update

To access the firmware update, users need to ensure their WH-1000XM5 headphones are paired with the Sony Headphones app on their Android or iOS devices. Once connected, the app should notify users of the available update. In case the notification is not automatically received, users can initiate the update manually by navigating to the Sony Connect app and following the prompts to install the new firmware.

Regarding head-tracked spatial audio, subscribers to Netflix's Premium plan can take full advantage of this feature while watching supported content. The premium plan offers spatial audio support, whereas the basic tier does not. Additionally, for the best experience with the Multipoint feature, users are encouraged to enable it in the settings of the Sony Headphones app, ensuring seamless connections between devices and maintaining LDAC audio quality.

Sony's WH-1000XM5 has been widely regarded as one of the best noise-canceling headphones on the market, and the latest firmware update only serves to reinforce that reputation. With head-tracked spatial audio and improved Bluetooth Multipoint functionality, these headphones have taken a significant leap forward in providing a more immersive and seamless listening experience.
