Sony’s Latest ULT Speakers Are Built to Shake the Room (and Maybe Your Neighbors)

Sony has expanded its ULT Power Sound series with three new wireless speakers built for everything from beach days to full-scale parties.

Sony’s Latest ULT Speakers Are Built to Shake the Room (and Maybe Your Neighbors)

Sony just rolled out three new additions to its ULT Power Sound lineup: the ULT Field 3, ULT Field 5, and ULT Tower 9. These Bluetooth speakers are built with bass in mind, and they offer a range of options depending on whether you're heading to the beach or hosting a full-blown house party. Each speaker comes with new features like dedicated bass modes, adjustable EQs, and multi-speaker pairing, giving users more control over how they listen.

Let’s see what each speaker brings to the table.

ULT Field 3

At $199.99, the ULT Field 3 is the smallest of the three and is designed for easy, on-the-go listening. It replaces the older SRS-XE300 and has a similar compact shape with a shoulder strap, so you can carry it around without fuss.

Under the hood, it’s got a single woofer and tweeter, with passive radiators on both sides to boost the bass. If you want more low-end sound, there’s a ULT1 button right on the speaker that instantly kicks in a bass-enhancing mode. You can also use Sony’s Sound Connect app to tweak things further using the built-in 7-band EQ.

Battery-wise, you’re looking at up to 24 hours of playback if you're keeping things moderate. But crank it up with ULT1 mode and higher volume, and you’ll probably get closer to 5 hours. If you're in a rush, a quick 10-minute charge gives you about 2 hours of use. It’s also rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, so it should handle poolside hangs and beach trips just fine.

ULT Field 5

If you’re after a little more volume and a built-in light show, the $329.99 ULT Field 5 might be a better fit. This one’s a bit of a step up from the Field 3 with a second tweeter and the addition of a second bass mode—ULT2—that boosts both the bass and treble for a fuller, louder sound. It’s replacing the older SRS-XG300 and costs slightly less than that model did.

Battery life is a bit longer than the Field 3, topping out at 25 hours with lights and bass boosts off. Turn everything on and crank the volume, and you’re probably looking at 2.5 hours or so. But like its smaller sibling, the Field 5 has quick charge support—10 minutes of charging gets you around 3 hours of playback.

One of the best features here is the LED lighting. It’s built into the ends of the speaker and pulses along with the beat. You can control the lighting modes through the Sound Connect app or just turn them off entirely if you're going for something more low-key.

The Field 5 also supports both stereo pairing and Party Connect, so you can sync it with other Sony speakers for bigger sound.

ULT Tower 9

At the top of the lineup is the ULT Tower 9—a full-size party speaker that brings serious volume and plenty of extras. It’s priced at $899.99 for the battery-powered version or $749.99 if you’re okay plugging it into the wall (that version is called the ULT Tower 9AC).

It’s a hefty piece of gear, weighing in at around 65 pounds, but Sony has included larger wheels and a sturdy handle to make moving it around a bit easier. Inside, it packs a 12.6-inch woofer, four tweeters, and two midrange drivers, arranged to deliver sound in all directions. Like the Field 5, it includes both ULT1 and ULT2 sound modes, plus a 10-band EQ for more detailed adjustments.

Battery life matches the Field 5 at up to 25 hours, with fast charging that nets about 3 hours of playback in 10 minutes. And like any self-respecting party speaker, it comes with an upgraded LED light show—23 LED modules in total, projecting light across a wide area and syncing to the beat.

The Tower 9 also has more connectivity options. It supports wireless microphones for karaoke, and there’s even an optical input for connecting to a TV. With that, you can enable TV Sound Booster mode, which adds more punch to your shows or movies.

All three speakers come with Bluetooth and support Sony’s Party Connect feature, letting you link up to 100 compatible speakers together. They also support stereo pairing if you just want a two-speaker setup.

Sony has simplified app control by merging its speaker apps into one: the Sony | Sound Connect app. This lets you adjust EQ settings, manage lighting, pair speakers, and more—all from your phone.

Sony is also releasing a new ULT Mic for $149. It works with the ULT Field 7, ULT Tower 9, and ULT Tower 10, and adds karaoke or PA functionality to the setup.
