Technics has entered the wireless speaker market with the launch of the SC-CX700, its first-ever active wireless speaker system. Unveiled at IFA 2024, the SC-CX700 combines Technics' signature audio engineering with a stylish design, appealing to music lovers who value both aesthetics and sound quality.
The SC-CX700 is available in three colors—Charcoal Black, Silky Gray, and Terracotta Brown—and features a sleek design crafted from suede material. This choice not only adds a tactile element to the speaker's appearance but also serves a functional purpose by dampening unwanted sound reflections, which can enhance acoustic performance. The compact, bookshelf-sized design allows the SC-CX700 to blend seamlessly into various home environments without compromising on its sonic capabilities.
At the core of the SC-CX700 is Technics’ proprietary full-digital JENO (Jitter Elimination and Noise-shaping Optimization) Engine amplifier technology paired with a coaxial driver system. The coaxial unit, including a Smooth Flow Diaphragm, is designed to deliver dynamic sound with enhanced clarity and fidelity. The system also incorporates Model-Based Distortion Cancelling (MBDC) technology, which offers improved control over the driver's motion, aiming to reduce distortion even at high sound pressure levels.
Technics has addressed potential sound quality issues caused by vibrations with its Balanced Driver Mounting Architecture (BDMA) and a dual-chamber design that separates the amplifier from the driver. This structure helps to minimize interference between components, preserving the integrity of the audio signal. A Smooth-Flow bass port integrates with the design, contributing to the production of tight, powerful bass suitable for a variety of music genres.
The SC-CX700 is designed as a versatile 'plug and play' system. It can operate as a standalone Wi-Fi streaming speaker, function as a compact Hi-Fi system with integrated amplifier and speaker, or serve as an alternative to a soundbar when connected to a TV via HDMI ARC input.
This flexibility is enhanced by Technics' Space Tune™ technology, which optimizes sound output based on the speaker’s placement within a room. Space Tune can be adjusted through the Technics Audio Center (TAC) app, available on both Android and iOS devices, allowing users to tailor the audio experience to their specific environment.
The speaker system supports multiple streaming platforms thanks to built-in Google Chromecast functionality. Users can access services such as Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer, and Amazon Music HD, alongside internet radio options. Furthermore, connectivity options are robust, including analog inputs like 3.5mm, USB-C, phono (MM), HDMI eARC, and a subwoofer output, catering to a wide range of audio setups and preferences.
In line with growing concerns about environmental sustainability, Technics has introduced eco-friendly packaging for the SC-CX700. The new packaging eliminates the use of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and instead uses smart-shaped cardboard that protects the product during shipping while also being easier to remove and recycle.
“An ideal choice for premium audiophile performance while keeping lifestyle elegance and ease of accessibility at the forefront, the SC-CX700 brings together Technics highest advancements in sound quality to a variety of entertainment and media sources. To sum up, the SC-CX700 is a top performer that may set a benchmark for others to follow in the active speaker system category.” said Bill Voss, Technics Business Development Manager.
With a price tag of $2,999.99, the SC-CX700 enters a competitive market, positioned against other high-end active speaker systems such as the KEF LS50 Wireless II.
Each speaker in the SC-CX700 system is individually amplified, a feature that distinguishes it from many other powered speaker systems where typically only one speaker houses the amplifier. This design decision reflects Technics' commitment to achieving optimal sound quality, albeit at a premium price point.
The SC-CX700's ability to be used both wired and wirelessly adds another layer of flexibility, with the option to place each speaker freely within a room or connect them via cables for a more traditional setup. The system is set to be available from December 2024 through Technics Hi-Fi dealers.
